Effectiveness of therapeutic ultrasound for the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome (the USTINCTS trial): study protocol for a three-arm, prospective, multicentre, randomised controlled trial

Abstract: IntroductionThere has no consensus on optimal management of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), the most common compression neuropathy. Conservative therapy is generally accepted as first-line intervention. Therapeutic ultrasound has been widely reported to be treatment beneficial in nerve regeneration and conduction, and further accelerate compression recovery. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of therapeutic ultrasound for CTS treatment. Methods and analysisThis study protocol entails a … Show more

“…As there are several physiotherapeutic techniques for treating mild to moderate CTS and there is no consensus on the best effective method to manage CTS, the choice of treatment for CTS is still up for debate [3]. The clinical trials required to determine the effectiveness of various modalities in the treatment of CTS should be done; Currently, there are only a few studies available comparing outcomes between a novel treatment strategy and a combination of techniques [36]. The target of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the multimodal electrotherapy strategy and the median NFT on pain intensity level, pinch grip strength, FSS, SSS, SDL, and MDL in patients with chronic CTS.…”

“…The study by Dominguez et al [ 82 ] is a multicenter RCT investigating the impact of CPAP on the incidence of pre-eclampsia in high-risk pregnant women with OSA. Another ongoing multicentric RCT, the SAFER (Sleep Apnea during Pregnancy: Evaluation of Risks) study [ 83 ], is currently aiming at recruiting 1500 patients to provide conclusive results on the effect of CPAP in treating OSA in pregnancy. These studies underscore the importance of screening for and treating OSA during pregnancy to optimize both maternal and fetal health outcomes.…”

“…Meanwhile, patients face difficulties in detecting changes in the tightness of the splint during long-term wear, which ultimately affects treatment outcomes. Furthermore, the pressure data from splints used by recovered fracture patients is not utilized, thus failing to guide the upgrading of subsequent treatment approaches [6][7][8] .…”
