Effectiveness of the Qilian Mountain Nature Reserve of China in Reducing Human Impacts

Abstract: The management effectiveness of protected areas plays a key role in biodiversity and ecosystem services conservation. We evaluated the effectiveness of Qilian Mountain Nature Reserve (QMNR) in reducing human footprint (HF). Four dominant human activity factors, including population density, land use, road distribution, and night light, were incorporated for HF mapping. Comparisons of the HF value between inside and outside QMNR and its four functional zones were conducted. The results show that both the HF ins… Show more

“…Modern climatology analyses pointed out that the QMNP is affected by the interplay of the Asian summer monsoon and mid-latitude westerlies [40]. The hydrological network radiates outward from the Qilian Mountains, principally comprising the Shiyang River, Heihe River, and Shule River systems, which are fed by precipitation and glacier meltwater inputs [41]. Prominent vegetation types, including alpine meadows, cold temperate coniferous forests, and temperate desert steppes, exhibit discernible zonal distributions, fostering habitats for numerous rare and endangered species such as snow leopards, white-billed sparrows, and black-necked cranes.…”

“…The QMNNR (97 1). The total area of the reserve is about 2.65 × 10 4 km 2 , and the functional area is divided into a core area (5.05 × 10 3 km 2 ), a buffer zone (3.87 × 10 3 km 2 ), and an experimental area (1.09 × 10 4 km 2 ) [53]. Most of the reserve is situated 3000-3500 m above sea level, and precipitation is mainly distributed from May to September, with the most precipitation concentrated in the period from July to August.…”

“…1). With a total area of 50,200 km 2 and an altitude of 4000-5000 m, the QMNP is an important ecological security barrier, water conservation area, and biodiversity conservation area for China (Gao et al, 2021;Li et al, 2022). The QMNP is the core area of the Qilian Mountains.…”
