According to the United Nations (UN), the global population may skyrocket to 9.8 billion people in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100, placing an overwhelming burden on food security as the world will have to meet this growing demand. Maize is the largest staple grain crop produced in developing countries. The maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais, is one of the most destructive post-harvest pests of stored cereals and grains. The maize weevil contributes up to 40% of total food-grain losses during storage, mainly in developing countries. Current synthetic pesticides are ineffective, and, moreover, they raise serious environmental safety concerns as well as consumer health hazards. Drawing from past oversights and current environmental realities and projections, the global population has been switching to green living by developing sustainable strategies. In our context, these new greener strategies include the utilization of medicinal plants to control maize weevil infestation, which unlocks unlimited innovative possibilities, and, thus, improves the yield, quality, and safety of maize. Medicinal plants are less toxic, easily biodegradable, and capable of protecting grain from pests. This paper systematically outlines the literature on host plants as well as the feeding and associated diseases of the maize weevil. In light of this, we cement medicinal plants as excellent candidates in the pursuit of greener, sustainable, more potent, and cost-effective pesticides.

Anisopteromalus calandrae (Howard) shows great promise as an ectoparasitoid for controlling various coleopteran pests in warehouses. However, for a large‐scale release, it is crucial to establish an ample supply of A. calandrae while carefully maintaining their quality and effectiveness. Appropriate cold storage techniques are the key to achieving these goals. Previous studies on cold storage have focused on specific developmental stages and explored cold storage conditions that can be applied only to those stages. Herein, we examined the development, survival and reproductive capacity of A. calandrae at different temperatures (13, 16, and 19 °C) and storage durations (30, 60, and 90 d) and evaluated the fitness of the offspring. A. calandrae completed its egg‐to‐larva development and pupated at 16 °C, but its development was arrested at an early pupal stage. Even after 90 d of cold storage at 16 °C, the survival rate of A. calandrae remained high at 77%, with no significant impact on reproductive capacity. Furthermore, cold storage showed no negative effect on the F1 generation. In contrast, eggs stored at 13 °C failed to hatch, whereas those stored at 19 °C developed. Adults emerged after > 60 d. This indicates that storage at 19 °C is only suitable for short durations. Our findings highlight the developmental pattern of A. calandrae at 16 °C, indicating that the parasitic wasp can be stored for a long time at this temperature across all stages of development before pupation, substantially facilitating its mass reproduction and industrial production.

This study evaluated the ability of pteromalid parasitoids Anisopteromalus calandrae and Lariophagus distinguendus reared on Sitophilus zeamais to control stored product coleopteran pests Sitophilus oryzae, Rhyzopertha dominica and Lasioderma serricorne. In trials of parasitoid treatment with A. calandrae, fewer pests (S. oryzae and R. dominica) emerged than in the control. Parasitoid reproduction was highest with S. oryzae as a host, followed by R. dominica and L. serricorne. In trials of parasitoid treatment with L. distinguendus, fewer pests (S. oryzae, R. dominica and L. serricorne) emerged than in the control treatment. Sitophilus oryzae was the host with the highest rate of parasitoid reproduction, although the greatest level of reduction was seen in R. dominica (i.e., host feeding levels were higher for this host species). For L. serricorne, no L. distinguendus progeny was produced. For both species, parasitoids with significantly longer bodies and tibiae emerged from S. oryzae. These results suggest that both parasitoids have potential for use as biocontrol agents for different coleopteran species that attack stored rice.
