Effectiveness of surgery versus conservative treatment for lumbar spinal stenosis: A system review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

Abstract: Surgery groups showed better late clinical outcomes after one year and higher complication rate throughout the follow-up duration, although it had no significant differences compared with conservative groups in the first six months post-treatment. However, there was no evidence that a definitive method could be firmly recommended to LSS patients. Further researches were needed to achieve high quality and credible results.

“…Conservative treatment is often the rst choice for such patients, including bed rest, physiotherapy, traction, medication and acupuncture (23)(24)(25). The above treatments are symptomatic, but for elderly patients with LSS, the lesions are mostly caused by degeneration of the tissue around the nerve root, and will not be cured by these treatments.…”

“…Conservative treatment is considered the primary choice of treatment in spinal canal stenosis. However, in many cases, conservative therapy is not effective and therefore, surgical treatment is selected for the alleviation of pain (16). Even so, the surgery is not always effective and the symptoms may remain after the operation.…”

“…This surgery has several surgical methods. However, the effects and/or the outcomes of these different methods have never been fully investigated or clarified [1][2][3]. The literature indicates there is a lack of proper tools to determine how the spinal muscles perform their task after an intervention, such as lumbar spinal surgery for DLSS and how it relates to experienced pain or other factors that have an impact of daily life and quality of life.…”
