Effectiveness of Sildenafil in Treating Erectile Dysfunction in PTSD Patients

Abstract: The results of this study suggest that sildenafil citrate treatment for ED in PTSD patients was accompanied with improvement of ED symptoms and was found to be significantly better than placebo. Nevertheless, this effect should be considered marginal since patients still meet the criteria of ED after treatment. Larger, parallel group studies are warranted.

“…The finding that overall problems in sexual functioning did not improve during BA-TE is consistent with the persistence or exacerbation of sexual problems seen among patients with PTSD treated with SSRIs or sildenafil citrate (Kotler et al, 2000; Orr et al, 2006; Safarinejad et al, 2009). Although participants with significant sexual problems at baseline did report greater improvements (particularly in terms of sexual arousal) as compared to those without sexual problems at baseline, the small overall effect on sexual problems suggests that these issues may require additional attention among veterans presenting for treatment of PTSD and depression symptoms.…”

“…Despite this, far less research has focused on the treatment of these co-occurring conditions (Kotler et al, 2000; Orr et al, 2006; Safarinejad, Kolahi, & Ghaedi, 2009). Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are a common class of medications prescribed to treat symptoms of both depression and PTSD (Kupfer, Frank, & Phillips, 2012; Steckler & Risbrough, 2012).…”

“…The medication amplifies the effects of sexual stimulation by regarding the degradation of this enzyme. Sildenafil has been found effective in several subpopulations of men with ED, including sufferers from diabetes, hypertension, spinal cord injuries [7], multiple sclerosis [11], depression [10,36], PTSD [25], men after resection of the prostate or radical prostatectomy [22], after renal transplant [30], men on dialysis [5] and men aged 65 years and older [3].…”
