Effectiveness of Rhythmic Play on the Attention and Memory Functioning in Children with Mild Intellectual Disability (MID)

Abstract: The present paper aimed at investigating the effects of rhythmic play on ID (Intellectually Disabled), children's attention and memory functioning at the age range of 9-16 years. Research measures included Raven Colored progressive matrixes for children and Canners neuropsychological test and Vinland adaptive behavior scale questionnaire. Statistical population comprised all ID students in elementary schools in the city of Esfahan in the Iranian academic year 2011. The research sample consisted of 20 children … Show more

“…Kalkhran and Shariati [20] investigated the effect of play therapy on the shortterm memory of children with teachable intellectual disabilities. Taghipour [22] also conducted a study on the effectiveness of rhythmic games on attention and working memory in children with mild intellectual disability. In both studies, the effect of play therapy on improving short-term and active memory was mentioned.…”

“…Therefore, nonparametric tests, including Friedman, Mann-Whitney, and Bonferroni tests and Generalized Estimation Equation (GEE) were used to analyze the data. A significance level of 0.05 was considered and SPSS v. 22 was used for data analysis.…”

“…16,25 Children with spastic quadriplegic usually have the poorest gross motor function and mostly are unambulatory. 26 All subjects in present study could finish the 6MWT. The mean of 6MWD of all subjects was lower than previous studies.…”

“…Nevertheless, research on the cognitive benefits of physical activity interventions showed promising results suggesting a facilitative effect on these cognitive functions in children with intellectual disabilities. Javan et al (2014) explored the effects of a three-month rhythmic and play intervention on attention functions in twenty participants with mild intellectual disabilities (9-16 years). Results from questionnaires showed improved attention functions.…”

“…To our knowledge, this is the first physical activity intervention study using an experimental design and computer-based cognitive tasks to examine the effects on the above-mentioned cognitive functions in this population. We formulated the following hypotheses regarding the outcomes of the intervention group compared to the controls: 1) larger improvement in accuracy and reaction time (RT) between pre-and post-intervention testing in vigilance was expected for the intervention group (based on attention findings by Javan et al, 2014); 2) higher accuracy scores but no significant differences in RT were expected in resistance to distractor interference and response inhibition following intervention (based on accuracy and RT outcomes by Chang et al, 2014 and inhibition findings by Pesce et al, 2016).…”
