Effectiveness of Previous Mumps Vaccination During a Summer Camp Outbreak

Abstract: Outbreaks of mumps in settings such as summer camps can occur despite high vaccination rates. Vaccine effectiveness for 2 mumps vaccinations was greater than vaccine effectiveness for 1 mumps vaccination. Therefore, recommendation of 2 mumps vaccinations for summer camp participants continues to be appropriate. Control of mumps disease relies on broad vaccination coupled with correct clinical diagnosis and strict control measures.

“…This finding is compatible with the outbreak-related VE of 92.4% and 86.4% seen 5-6 y after the 2nd dose given at school entry among 9-to 10-and 11-to 12-y-olds in England. 26 Our results are also similar to the 2-dose VE of 91.6% calculated during a summer camp outbreak in the US; 27 however, mean time since last dose was not determined, and the cohort consisted of both younger campers (mean age: 12 y) and older staff (21 y). Though response rates were high in the adult cohort, cohort sizes for 1-dose and 2-dose vaccinated were small.…”

“…In addition, the spectrum of vaccine recipients in practice is typically wider than that of the healthy, highly responsive on April 30, 2019 by guest http://cvi.asm.org/ vaccine recipients usually selected for efficacy trials. So, from a public health perspective, the impact of vaccination on outcome in the field should be analyzed (2,3,18,22). We believe our study, with its large sample size, is the first to accurately determine the VE of the S 79 mumps virus vaccine.…”

“…In highly crowded settings where children and young adults congregate, such as summer camps and universities, mumps outbreaks may occur despite high vaccination coverage. 9,10 Over the last decade, mumps outbreaks have hit many countries with national mumps vaccination programs. Possible solutions for these outbreaks have been suggested, such as raising vaccination coverage, adding a third MMR dose, delaying the second dose or developing more effective vaccines.…”
