Effectiveness of orthoses for treatment in patients with spinal pain

Abstract: Spinal pain is a common patient complaint in clinical practice. Conservative treatment methods include oral medication, physical therapy, injections, and spinal orthoses. The clinical application of orthoses is debated because of potential complications associated with long-term use, such as muscle weakness and joint contracture. We reviewed the orthoses most frequently used to manage spinal pain. We review the use of soft cervical and Philadelphia collars, lumbosacral corsets, and thoracolumbosacral orthosis … Show more

“…2 For management of LBP and sciatica, various conservative treatments, including oral pain medication, physical therapy, exercise, and interventions, are being applied. [3][4][5] Of these treatment modalities, epidural steroid injection (ESI) has been applied widely in patients with LBP or sciatica. 6 The anti-inflammatory property of steroids reduces inflammation around the sinuvertebral nerve and spinal nerve roots.…”

“…Although long-term use of spinal orthoses is debated due to the potential complications that may arise, such as muscle weakness and joint contractures, the shortterm use is known to decrease pain and improve function during the treatment period (Muzin, Isaac, Walker et al, 2008;Azadinia, Takamjani, Kamyab et al, 2017). The effective role of spinal orthoses in reducing pain arises from their ability to stabilize the spine and decrease motion, thus causing a of function (Choo, and Chang, 2020). Cervical and lumbosacral spine orthoses are used especially for immobilization.…”

“…Chronic back pain is one of most common musculoskeletal disorders causing chronic pain and disability [ 97 ]. Clinicians employ several treatment methods such as anti-inflammatory oral medications, epidural steroid injection, pulsed radiofrequency, and physical therapy; in many cases, back pain is refractory to these treatments [ 98 , 99 , 100 ].…”
