Effectiveness of Natura 2000 areas for environmental protection in 21 European countries

Abstract: To assess the dynamics of changes in CORINE Land Cover classes in areas of the Natura 2000 ecological network, three landscape metrics were examined. Traditional pixel-based classification, with majority rules aggregation based on the example of the CORINE Land Cover dataset, was applied. To identify the possible differences in the considered metrics, according to the year as well as to the country, statistical analysis between the linear mixed model and the variance model with repeated measurements was perfor… Show more

“…Even if the artificialization phenomenon stands out as being in a continuous growth at the level of the European Union [49], in Romania, regarding Natura 2000 sites, it is not reflected in the territory on large areas (less than 1% in the case of ROSCI). However, this process must be treated with increased care, as irreversibility makes this conversion have a major impact on protected areas.…”

“…Protected-area networks are part of the natural environment and are subject to constant change mainly due to human activities, both positive and negative. The EU's natUra 2000 network is crucial for reducing losses in environmental and landscape diversity, with changes remaining greater in surrounding non-protected areas (Kubacka & Smaga 2019). Changes in SPAs and SACs have already been reported in Bulgaria (Nikolov et al 2014) account the effectiveness of the protected area in comparison to the surrounding nonprotected area.…”

“…The metrics were calculated using the landscape structure analysis program FRAGSTATS [60,61]. This software is recommended for use with raster datasets and is the most common program used to quantitatively analyze the correlations between landscape patterns and ecological processes [62][63][64][65][66][67]. The landscape division index (DIVISION) is based on the cumulative patch area distribution and is interpreted as the probability that two randomly chosen pixels in the landscape are not situated in the same patch [68].…”
