Effectiveness of Mobile Technology in Managing Fatigue: Balert App

Abstract: The performance of professional tasks with a high cognitive, emotional, and even physiological demand, can cause a state of mental fatigue, which implies attentional alterations, greater errors in the tasks performed and a decrease in personal and work productivity caused by a deterioration of the cognitive control processes. The present study presents a mobile phone application named BAlert that allows monitoring and controlling the body's fatigue processes based on the scores obtained in the Stroop effect an… Show more

“…Although our protocol included a wide range of cognitive tests, we cannot exclude the possibility that other cognitive tasks may improve prediction. For instance, some authors have used the Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test as a measure of cognitive fatigue, especially in the field of multiple sclerosis [47,48], although they also observed no correlation with subjective fatigue [9,49,50]. In addition, we used the MFIS as a reference for the assessment of fatigue and cognitive fatigue.…”

“…In this manner, measuring cognitive ability through the Stroop test together with HRV has proven to be an effective method of fatigue detection and management ( De La Vega et al, 2021a ). This novel method integrates different domains through which fatigue manifests itself: firstly, the cognitive impairments that occur when fatigue arises can be detected through the Stroop test; and secondly, the physiological manifestation of the autonomic balance of the individual can be measured through HRV which is in an of itself an indicator of wellbeing and homeostatic balance.…”

“…Understanding the psychophysiological effects of internal and external demands on the development of fatigue is essential ( Holm et al, 2009 ; Du et al, 2020 ; De La Vega et al, 2021a ). As fatigue has become increasingly relevant in a variety of contexts, it has gained attention in recent years ( Brown, 1994 ; Enoka and Duchateau, 2016 ).…”

“…Several researches have examined the usefulness of measuring fatigue applications for the objective measurement of construction students' or workers' weariness. Ricardo et al [14] present a mobile phone application called BAlert that enables monitoring and regulation of the body's tiredness processes based on Stroop effect scores and heart rate variability. A pilot research including 63 persons who have utilized the program 942 times has been conducted.…”
