Effectiveness of Minimizing Cutting Fluid Use when Turning Difficult-to-cut Alloys

Abstract: The environmental impact of lubricants is a key issue towards sustainable manufacturing. Even if dry cutting can be identified as the ultimate goal to achieve, lubrication is still a hardly surmountable industrial standard when machining difficult-to-cut alloys. In order to reduce the pollutant emissions and the problems related to the workers' health, alternative systems as Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) or Cooling (MQC) have been emerging over the years. This research aims to investigate the machinabilit… Show more

“…The Taguchi parameter design concerns three nominal-the-best specifications, including ring groove diameter specification, inner groove diameter specification, and inner diameter of pistons. Together with five control factors consisting of: type of carbon steel, type of cutting fluid, cutting depth, spindle speed, and chuck pressure, the L27(3 13 ) orthogonal array was selected for this experiment. Three models: Taguchi model, Taguchi RSM model with reduced ANOVA of the results from Taguchi RSM mode, and Taguchi Back Propagation Neural Network and Genetic Algorithm model, validated with ANOVA, were constructed to find the parameter combinations of five control factors for each model.…”

“…In the reference [13] present a research that aims to investigate the machinability of a Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb alloy, applying low cutting fluid (water and emulsion) volumes to the cutting area in the form of a precisionmetered droplets mist. The results in terms of tool wear/life, surface quality, lubricant consumption, and environmental impact are discussed with reference to those of Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL), wet and dry cutting.…”

“…Types of occupational risk associated with cutting fluids which become airborne and formed aerosol during machining, show that these risk were numerous and widespread. In addition, the costs for cutting fluid supply and disposal are not negligible with respect to overall production cost [5]. Furthermore, it is believed that the only small amount of coolant play role in the cooling system application.…”

“…The performance of cutting fluids is mainly evaluated by surface quality and cutting property, such as cutting force, tool life, and surface roughness. [12][13][14][15] The development of the green cutting fluids [16][17][18] has also been studied a lot recent years.…”
