Effectiveness of metal powder additions for martensitic hardfacing alloy on its wear properties

Abstract: Selecting welding consumables to get satisfactory results in hard facing weld repair jobs at a low cost is an important consideration. The standard martensitic welding electrodes used for hardfacing are expensive, so an investigation into finding suitable substitutes is a worthwhile activity. The objective of this study was to analyze the hardfacing deposits on using a low carbon steel welding electrode with metal powders added to the weld pool. Four different samples were hardfaced applying a submerged arc we… Show more

“…The toughness fracture for ballistic impact resistance can be improved by using flux cored low-hydrogen ferritic steels [97]. Additionally, the use of powdered forms of consumables can help reduce dilution during hardfacing [87,98]. Constituent elements in the alloys and their wt.% composition directly influence the type and quantity of hard phases formed in the deposits [4,99].…”

“…Another study suggested that specific weld overlap could also support dilution control [1]. Similarly, introducing metal powder into the weld pool was found to support a reduction in dilution along with reducing hard layer thickness and improving the properties of the deposit [87,98].…”

“…The fracture toughness design should be considered if the austenitic matrix was delivered to a hardfacing alloy. Amongst the challenges to produce a martensitic hardfacing, one is the high-cost of welding electrodes [29]. Therefore, it is useful to analyze the results related to the austenitic matrix, once the difference between its hardness and the carbide hardness would be a problem, following the premise of Figure 7.…”
