Effectiveness of management zones for recovering parrotfish species within the largest coastal marine protected area in Brazil

Abstract: The establishment of multiple zones offering different protection levels within a Marine Protected Area (MPA) can minimize social conflicts while maintaining associated biodiversity benefits such as fish population replenishment. Parrotfishes are among one of the most ecologically important reef fishes; yet extremely overexploited worldwide. In this context, well-designed priority management areas allowing no fishing activity (no-take zones) could help recover fish species, such as parrotfishes, through a MPA … Show more

“…Expanding and enhancing protected areas are fundamental for maintaining ecosystem functions and protecting the Earth's biodiversity [25]. Numerous studies indicate the effectiveness of protected areas for local biodiversity [26,27], water and soil retention [28], carbon sequestration [29], and human well-being [30]. However, there is still an ongoing debate on the positive role of protected areas in the global situation.…”

“…Tropical reefs are no exception, with degraded states and processes projected to worsen in the long term due to escalating human pressures [4][5][6] . Given the diverse and essential contributions to people provided by tropical reefs, such degradation will have overwhelming consequences for human livelihood and welfare, primarily in developing countries 7 .…”

“…Rivers are among the most impacted ecosystems worldwide, being difficult to mitigate the multiple impacts on fish communities, and where the engagement of local communities and stakeholders in the application of protection measures is a key factor in managing the effectiveness of the protection in PAs (Fidler et al, 2022;Pereira et al, 2022). Additional management measures, such as removing barriers or building fish passes, are needed to allow the long-distance migratory fishes to complete their breeding cycle (Hermoso et al, 2015).…”
