Residents and workers exposure to high carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in buildings may cause headache, dyspnea, fatigue, or drowsiness. However, the effect of plants on in-building CO2 reduction and adverse effect relief is largely unknown. We recruited 36 healthy participants from an office room with plants and 32 healthy participants from another office room without plant in the same office building in Taipei. The participants in the office room with plants during 2020 would move to the office room without plant in 2021. The twelve repeated measurements per year of CO2, fine particles (PM2.5), total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), blood pressure (BP), serum CO2 (TCO2), and four rating questions of headache, dyspnea, fatigue, and drowsiness were obtained for each participant. The statistical results showed that levels of drowsiness and systolic BP were significantly lower among participants in the office room with plants compared to those in the office room without plants by t -test and paired t -test. The associations between increased indoor CO2 and increased serum CO2 were observed in the office room with plants (1.32%) and without plant (4.52%) by mixed-effects models. Also, the associations between indoor CO2 and drowsiness were observed in office rooms (with plants: 14.57%; without plant: 3.82%). The conclusion of the present study is that plants in office environment can reduce CO2 levels and may lower CO2-related health effects.

The spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) was effectively reducing the carbon monoxide indoor and carboxyhemoglobin level of the smokers. The high concentrations of CO can cause death in humans who are exposed to both active smokers and passive smokers. We use spider plants in this study to determine the effect of increasing the number of that plants in reducing CO indoor and COHb levels. This study started from respondend determination, blood sampling, measure the CO level indoor, before and after smoking. This study was conducted in March 2021. The respondents used in this study were 7 respondents who participated in the blood sampling procedure and were active smokers aged 33-50 years. Respondents smoked indoors for 5 minutes with 1 cigarette. The Spider plant used in this study was 5 until 15 plant pots. Data analysis was obtained from the results of measuring CO indoor which was measured 3 times taking sample points before and after the respondent smoked using the Lutron GCO 2008 CO Meter. Blood samples were taken by the midwife indoor. This research was conducted indoor size 7 x 7 meters (Figure 1). The number of ventilation is 2 windows beside the door and 2 windows at the back with an entrance, 7 chairs and 7 tables for smoking respondents. We measured the CO level indoor directly using CO meter and COHb level from the respondent's blood using spectrophotometer in Health Science Laboratory, Lamongan Islamic University. Then, we analyzed the measurement results using data plot and linear regression using Microsoft Excel to identify the associations between CO level among the number of spider plant, COHb level, age, smoking intensity, and nutritional status. The result showing that spider plants can reduce CO levels indoor 65% and also can reduce COHb level 75%.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) directly affects human health. The increase in PM and CO2 concentration indoors caused an increase in the prevalence of sick building syndrome (SBS) symptoms. Plants could contribute to reducing particulate matter (PM) and CO2. This study identifies the most efficient evergreen plant species for improving indoor air quality by assessing the ability of five different indigenous Korean evergreen plant species to reduce PM and CO2 and regulate humidity and temperature under indoor environmental conditions in acrylic chambers. The clean air delivery rates (CADR) were calculated to evaluate the efficacy of plants in reducing PM and CO2. We assessed the performance of removing the five study plants on PM1 (~0.68–3.01 m3/h/leaf area), PM2.5 (~0.73–3.08 m3/h/leaf area), PM10 (~0.67–3.04 m3/h/leaf area), and CO2 (~0.48–1.04 m3/h/leaf area). The species Ilex pedunculosa, Pittosporum tobira, and Gardenia jasminoides were the most effective at reducing PM. The CADR of CO2 also differed among the five plant species and corresponded to their photosynthetic rate. Viburnum odoratissimum var. awabuki, which had the high photosynthetic rate, was most effective at reducing CO2. By contrast, PM reduction was correlated with plant leaf structure. Plants with a high leaf density can accumulate more PM. The plants were also able to control temperature and humidity. The average temperature of the control chamber was higher, and the humidity was lower than that of the plant chambers. In this study, the five evergreen species effectively reduced air pollutants and can be used to improve IAQ.
