Xiphidium caeruleum Aubl. is traditionally used in Cuba as an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antilithiatic and diuretic remedy. Here we studied the pharmacognostic parameters of the leaves of X. caeruleum, the preliminary phytochemical composition, diuretic activity and acute oral toxicity of the aqueous extracts from the leaves of plants collected in the vegetative (VE) and flowering (FE) stages. The morphological characteristics and physicochemical parameters of leaves and extracts were determined. The phytochemical composition was assessed by phytochemical screening, TLC, UV, IR and HPLC/DAD profiles. The diuretic activity was evaluated in Wistar rats and compared to furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide and spironolactone. Epidermal cells, stomata and crystals were observed on the leaf surface. Phenolic compounds were identified as the main metabolites, including phenolic acids (gallic, caffeic, ferulic and cinnamic acids) and flavonoids (catechin, kaempferol-3-O-glucoside and quercetin). VE and FE showed diuretic activity. The activity of VE was similar to furosemide, and the activity of FE resembled spironolactone. No acute oral toxicity was observed. The presence of flavonoids and phenols in VE and FE may explain at least in part the traditional use and provide some insight into the reported ethnomedical use as a diuretic. Because of the differences in polyphenol profiles between VE and FE, further studies should be carried out to standardize the harvesting and extraction conditions in order to use X. caeruleum leaf extract as herbal medicine.

Fabrication of the macro and micro-scale microbial fuel cells to monitor oxalate biodegradation in human urine

This study presented the fabrication of macro and micro-scale microbial fuel cells (MFCs) to generate bioelectricity from oxalate solution and monitor the biodegradation in a micro-scale MFC for the first time. The maximum generated power density of 44.16 W m−3 in the micro-scale MFC elucidated its application as a micro-sized power generator for implantable medical devices (IMDs). It is also worthwhile noting that for the macro-scale MFC, the significant amounts of open circuit voltage, oxalate removal, and coulombic efficiency were about 935 mV, 99%, and 44.2%, respectively. These values compared to previously published studies indicate successful oxalate biodegradation in the macro-scale MFC. Regarding critical challenges to determine the substrate concentration in microfluidic outlets, sample collection in a suitable time and online data reporting, an analogy was made between macro and micro-scale MFCs to elicit correlations defining the output current density as the inlet and the outlet oxalate concentration. Another use of the system as an IMD is to be a platform to identify urolithiasis and hyperoxaluria diseases. As a versatile device for power generation and oxalate biodegradation monitoring, the use of facile and cheap materials (< $1.5 per device) and utilization of human excreta are exceptional features of the manufactured micro-scale MFC.

Background: Renal calculi, commonly known as kidney stones, is a prevalent urological condition that affects a substantial portion of the population worldwide. The formation of kidney stones is a complex process influenced by various factors, including diet, fluid intake, genetics, and metabolic abnormalities. The pathogenesis of renal calculi involves a complex interplay of multiple factors, including supersaturation of urine with stone-forming constituents, urinary supersaturation, crystallization, and aggregation. Objective: This review aims to provide an overview of the present understanding of renal calculi, their pathophysiology, diagnostic approaches, and available treatment modalities. Methods: This review discusses the different types of kidney stones, such as calcium oxalate, calcium phosphate, uric acid, and struvite stones, and explores their formation mechanisms and associated risk factors. The management of renal calculi relies on stone characteristics, patient symptoms, stone size, and location. Furthermore, counseling and education regarding lifestyle modifications and risk factor management are essential for long-term management. Conclusion: Accurate diagnosis and appropriate management based on stone characteristics and patient symptoms are essential for successful outcomes. Preventive strategies to reduce stone recurrence are vital for long-term management and patient well-being. However, further research is needed to refine diagnostic techniques, improve treatment options, and enhance the understanding of the underlying pathophysiology of renal calculi.
