Vernacular buildings are usually constructed using materials at hand, including wood, natural stone and bricks (either clay or mud bricks). All those materials are exposed to a series of environmental factors, affecting their structure and integrity. The literature review was conducted using different databases (Scopus, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink) using as keywords the historical material, "heritage" and the terms regarding the desired effect, within the envisaged time period (2010)(2011)(2012)(2013)(2014)(2015)(2016)(2017)(2018)(2019). The assessment of the results was performed by manual inspection (reading the entire article) and the selection of the works to be inserted in the current review was made by evaluating the contribution to the field. This review summarizes different aspects related to the restoration and conservation of wooden and masonry elements of traditional buildings, including materials used for biocidal interventions, protection against abiotic factors, cleaning and consolidation agents. Finally, a critical discussion regarding the current limitations and future perspectives concludes the review work, envisaging the role of researchers specialized in materials science in the context of cultural heritage conservation.

A maioria do patrimônio cultural construído na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, é feito de gnaisse ou granito, e a exposição das fachadas ao ambiente poluído leva a uma forte degradação. Para entender estes processos meteorológicos, foram estudados cinco edifícios históricos na cidade. Estes exibiram manchas de ferro, desintegração granular, bolhas, fraturas incipientes e escamação de contornos e desenvolvimento de crosta negra. As amostras coletadas nestes edifícios foram examinadas na tentativa de compreender os mecanismos da meteorologia de superfície. Amostras de rochas foram coletadas em áreas que apresentavam sérios sintomas de decomposição de rochas. O conteúdo de ânions e cátions dos materiais de construção foi avaliado por espectrometria AA e análise cromatográfica de íons. As amostras também foram estudadas por microscopia de emissão de campo (SEM), análise petrográfica e pelo seu conteúdo biológico por SEM e análise de DNA usando Illumina Mi-Seq Next Generation Sequencing. Todas as análises químicas mostraram altas concentrações de sais solúveis, tais como halita e gesso, que desempenham um papel muito importante na resistência à intempérie da pedra. A FE-SEM com análise dispersiva de energia permitiu a detecção dentro da rocha de fungos filamentosos esparsos, grupos de células bacterianas, diatomáceas raras e bactérias filamentosas fotossintéticas especialmente interessantes incrustadas com gesso reprecipitado, mostrando a participação de microrganismos na degradação da pedra.

Ceramic roof tiles are extremely common building materials that are subjected to the natural phenomenon of biodeterioration, which initially modifies the tile surface and ultimately causes its destruction. The bacterial diversity of the visible biofilm responsible for biodeterioration has been previously examined. In contrast, the early stages of tile colonization and pioneer biofilm growth on these surfaces have been poorly explored. To investigate these pioneering stages of bacterial tile colonization, we combined imagery and conventional culture-based approaches, as well as Illumina-based high-throughput sequencing methods to examine samples collected from unexposed new tiles and tiles that were subjected to few-months outdoor exposure. In all the samples, we observed a pioneering biofilm including a significant bacterial diversity, on both new materials and those subjected to slight exposure, with a total of 279 and 411 different OTUs detected, respectively. This pioneer diversity was dominated by Proteobacteria (more than 50% of the total bacterial diversity) and, at the genus level, by Sphingomonas and the genus 1174-901-12 related to the Beijerinckiaceae. Interestingly, the major patterns of the observed bacterial diversity remained similar between samples collected from unexposed and exposed tiles. Collectively, these data clearly indicate the need to focus on the pioneer colonizing bacteria that form the initial biofilm on building materials, which can subsequently lead to mature biofilm formation and visible biodeterioration.
