Effectiveness of Eriomin® in managing hyperglycemia and reversal of prediabetes condition: A double‐blind, randomized, controlled study

Abstract: This study evaluated the potential effectiveness of different doses of Eriomin® on hyperglycemia and insulin resistance associated with other metabolic biomarkers in prediabetic individuals. Prediabetes patients ( n = 103, 49 ± 10 years) were randomly divided into four parallel groups: (a) Placebo; (b) Eriomin 200 mg; (c) Eriomin 400 mg; and (d) Eriomin 800 mg. Assessment of biochemical, metabolic, inflammatory, hepatic, renal, anthropometric markers, blood pressure, and dietary paramete… Show more

“…In general, the flavanone amounts administered in human interventions to evaluate hesperidin effects range from 146 to 1000 mg, with an average dose of ~500–600 mg [ 35 ]. Moreover, flavanone effects are usually evaluated for weeks or months [ 36 , 37 ].…”

“…Whereas a recent study showed a reduction of glucose, insulin, triglycerides, cholesterol, LDL-c, and HOMA-IR index after two months of orange juice consumption in females [ 41 ], another study did not observe changes in these markers after a daily dose of 800 mg of hesperidin [ 40 ]. On the other hand, we found only one trial that evaluated the effects of eriocitrin in prediabetic individuals [ 35 ] and reported an improvement of hyperglycemic, inflammatory, and metabolic parameters, but not dose-dependently after consuming 200–800 mg/day eriocitrin for three months [ 35 ]. These results suggest that consistent consumption of lower eriocitrin doses could exert beneficial health effects.…”

“…Hesperidin is being intensively studied also as a preventative and therapeutic agent against the development of various types of metabolic diseases [47]. Lemon-derived eriocitrin, known to increase antioxidant capacity and decrease inflammatory markers in mice [48], is along with hesperidin the main ingredient of a nutraceutical product recently shown to be effective, in a double-blind randomized clinical study, in managing hyperglycemia and reversal of prediabetes condition [49].…”

“…No effect on redox status was observed after combined supplementation of 190 mg quercetin with 3.6 g α-linolenic acid a day for eight weeks [ 87 ]. A decrease in MDA and an increase in TAC were reported both for different intakes of flavonoid-rich supplement Eriomin® over twelve weeks [ 88 ] and 80 mg curcumin a day for ten weeks [ 89 ]. No effect on redox status of healthy participants was observed for supplementation with 1720 mg DHA and 600 mg EPA daily for 18 months [ 90 ] as well as daily intake of 1500 mg l -carnitine for 24 weeks [ 91 ].…”
