Effectiveness of Dry Cell Microscopic Simulation (DCMS) to Promote Conceptual Understanding about Battery

Abstract: Electricity is a concept that is abstract and difficult to see by eye directly, one example electric shock, but cannot see the movement of electric current so that students have difficulty by students. A computer simulation designed to improve the understanding of the concept of the workings of the dry cell (battery). This study was conducted to 82 students (aged 18-20 years) in the experimental group by learning to use the Dry Cell Microscopic Simulation (DCMS). The result shows the improving of students’ con… Show more

“…To make abstract phenomena more understandable to students, efforts are needed to visualize them in the form of models, simulations, or analogies that students can observe. Physics concepts that contain abstract phenomena require teaching media that can visualize these phenomena (Wibowo et al, 2017). A survey conducted by Semenikhina et al (2021) on physics teachers shows that computer simulations are needed such as Phet, VirtuLab, LabVIEW, and others to explain abstract phenomena.…”

“…The linkage between scientific reasoning and conceptual change is very close. Students' deductive reasoning is not always active and is used in the conceptual change process [5][6][7].…”

“…The use of interactive simulations benefits both students and instructors (Ben Ouahi et al, 2022). Virtual simulations can help students directly visualize the behavior of indirect macroscopic and microscopic phenomena and connect it to observable phenomena (Wibowo, 2017) and can be used as a computer-based simulation of some complex phenomena in real life (Winsberg, 2003). They have been shown to be effective in terms of saving time, being simple to use and conduct experiments, and providing multiple representations, including dynamically changing visual representations (Blake & Scanlon, 2007).…”
