Effectiveness of dietary inorganic nitrate for lowering blood pressure in hypertensive adults: a systematic review

Abstract: Objective: The objective of this review was to evaluate the effectiveness of inorganic nitrate on blood pressure in hypertensive adults. Introduction: Hypertension is associated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality in adults. Inorganic nitrate could be beneficial for lowering blood pressure and reducing cardiovascular disease risks. Evidence related to the treatment of hypertension through sources of inorganic nitrate has been presented. … Show more

“…The two independent reviewers (JH and YW) will retrieve and evaluate full texts of selected citations in detail which meet the inclusion criteria. Full texts that do not meet our inclusion criteria will be excluded, and excluding reasons will be attached as an appendix in the final systematic review report 34. Included studies will go through a critical screening process, and any differences between the two reviewers will be resolved through discussion.…”

“…Most studies have focused on the acute effect of BRJ on BP (9,(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19), while few studies have examined the effect of chronic nitrate consumption on BP (20)(21)(22). The rst study that tested the chronic effects of sodium nitrate on BP was a crossover study in healthy volunteers with 3 days supplementation and 10 days washout (22).…”

“…Recently, Ocampo et al (2018) reported that BRJ intervention could signi cantly decrease the risk of suffering cardiovascular events and that it should be promoted as a key component of a healthy lifestyle to control blood pressure in healthy and hypertensive individuals (17). In contrast, the most recent systematic review and meta-analysis of 12 randomized control trials examining the effect of BRJ on BP concluded that there was no change either on SBP or DBP in the intervention groups compared with the control group (19), therefore there is still some inconsistency in the literature.…”

“…Most systematic reviews have investigated the effects on blood pressure. Remington and Winters (2019), for example, analyzed the effect of BRJ on the blood pressure of hypertensive patient populations including twelve studies in which the subjects had a BP of above 120/80 mmHg (Remington and Winters 2019). Another systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted by Bahadoran et al (2017) including 22 studies on the impact of BRJ on blood pressure, but excluding studies assessing the acute effects on BP (Bahadoran et al 2017).…”
