During the first COVID-19 pandemic wave in Spain, 50% of deaths occurred in nursing homes, making it necessary for some hospitals to support these facilities with the care of infected patients. This study compares origin, characteristics, and mortality of patients admitted with COVID-19 during six pandemic waves in the Hospital Central de la Cruz Roja in Madrid. It is a retrospective observational study of patients ≥ 80 years old, admitted with an acute SARS-CoV-2 infection, with a total of 546 patients included, whose final outcome was death or discharge. During the first wave, those from nursing homes had a higher risk of death than those from home; during the two successive waves, the risk was higher for those from home; and in the last two waves, the risk equalized and decreased exponentially in both groups. Men had 72% higher risk of death than women. For each year of age, the risk increased by 4% (p = 0.036). For each Charlson index point, the risk increased by 14% (p = 0.019). Individuals in nursing homes, despite being older with higher comorbidity, did not show a higher overall lethality. The mortality decreased progressively in each successive wave due to high vaccination rates and COVID-19 control measures in this population.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop susceptible-exposed-infectious-recovered-vaccinated (SEIRV) models to examine the effects of vaccination on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) case trends in Malaysia during Phase 3 of the National COVID-19 Immunization Program amidst the Delta outbreak.METHODS: SEIRV models were developed and validated using COVID-19 case and vaccination data from the Ministry of Health, Malaysia, from June 21, 2021 to July 21, 2021 to generate forecasts of COVID-19 cases from July 22, 2021 to December 31, 2021. Three scenarios were examined to measure the effects of vaccination on COVID-19 case trends. Scenarios 1 and 2 represented the trends taking into account the earliest and latest possible times of achieving full vaccination for 80% of the adult population by October 31, 2021 and December 31, 2021, respectively. Scenario 3 described a scenario without vaccination for comparison.RESULTS: In scenario 1, forecasted cases peaked on August 28, 2021, which was close to the peak of observed cases on August 26, 2021. The observed peak was 20.27% higher than in scenario 1 and 10.37% lower than in scenario 2. The cumulative observed cases from July 22, 2021 to December 31, 2021 were 13.29% higher than in scenario 1 and 55.19% lower than in scenario 2. The daily COVID-19 case trends closely mirrored the forecast of COVID-19 cases in scenario 1 (best-case scenario).CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrated that COVID-19 vaccination reduced COVID-19 case trends during the Delta outbreak. The compartmental models developed assisted in the management and control of the COVID-19 pandemic in Malaysia.

Effective online consumer research helps companies on defining a successful strategy to increase user loyalty and shape brand engagement. Digital innovation introduced a dramatic change in businesses, particularly in the online news industry. Content consumers have a wide offer across different channels which increase the digital challenge for online news media companies to retain their readers and convert them into online subscribers. Furthermore, digital news publishers often strive to balance revenue sources in online business models. Thus, this study fills a gap in the literature on media consumer research by proposing a data‐driven approach that combines two machine learning (ML) models to allow managers dynamically improve their marketing and editorial strategies. Firstly, the authors present an online user profiling to identify consumer segments based on the interplay between several engagement’ variables substantiated in the literature research. Second, as few studies have explored the factors influencing users' intention to pay for such services, the eXtreme Gradient Boosting ML algorithm identifies the predictors of consumer's willingness to pay. Third, a dashboard presents the key performance indicators across the audience funnel. Thus, practical implications and business suggestions are presented in a two‐fold strategy to maximize revenue from digital subscriptions and advertising. Findings provide new insights into an engagement approach and the relation to acquire a digital subscription in online content platforms. We believe that the provided recommendations are potentially useful to help marketing and editorial teams to manage their customer engagement process across the funnel in a more efficient way.
