Effectiveness of carbamide peroxide and sodium perborate in non-vital discolored teeth

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of 16% carbamide peroxide gel (CP16%), tetrahydrate sodium perborate (SP) and mixture (CP16% + SP), in walking bleaching of non-vital discolored teeth. Materials and methods: Sixty single-rooted human premolars with intact crowns were used and initial color was assessed using Vita shade guide and standardized photos. The teeth were stained using rabbit fresh blood for 18 days and photos of discolored teeth and color evaluation were performed. The teeth were divided into 4 gr… Show more

“…The use of SP (+ water or HP) inside the pulp chamber in the walking bleach technique may reduce the chance of external root resorption because SP is less caustic and releases a less amount of ions. This technique also shows comparable results to those of >30% HP and a heat source (23). More recently, higher concentration CP gels have been launched to the market with indication to treat nonvital discolored teeth and became more popular than HP products.…”

“…As a higher HP concentration is desirable for nonvital tooth bleaching, a large number of participants of this survey did not selected CP at low concentrations. Nevertheless, some in vitro results disclosed that even these lower concentrations would be able to bleach discolored nonvital teeth (23). In relation to vital tooth bleaching, post-graduation training and time of clinical activity affected the choice.…”

“…Hydrogen peroxide (HP), carbamide peroxide (CP), and sodium perborate (SP) are the most common bleaching agents used for nonvital tooth bleaching (6,7). CP and SP act as a hydrogen peroxide reservoir and release hydrogen peroxide when dissociate (8). Even though the exact mechanism of tooth bleaching is not fully understood, Journal of Oral Science, Vol.…”
