Effectiveness of Buffered Lidocaine for Local Anesthesia During Liver Biopsy

Abstract: The aim of this research study was to evaluate the effectiveness of lidocaine versus lidocaine with sodium bicarbonate in reducing anxiety and pain, using visual analog scales, in subjects receiving local anesthetic during liver biopsies. The project included 199 subjects presenting for percutaneous liver biopsy using local anesthesia. Subjects were randomized into 2 groups: the control group, which received lidocaine alone, and the experimental group, which received lidocaine buffered with sodium bicarbonate.… Show more

“…Previous studies did not fully prevent the discomfort of intratesticular injections by volume reduction [10]. Further efforts to minimize injection pain may include the use of thinner needles or to buffer local anesthetics [43]. Buffering often automatically increases the injection volume when there are no more concentrated products on the market.…”

“…Effective relief of postoperative pain allows a faster postoperative recovery period and is associated with lower morbidity and higher patient satisfaction. Patients with lower postoperative pain scores were the ones who reported higher satisfaction levels (8)(9)(10)(11)(25)(26)(27)(28)(29). Improving postoperative pain control is one of the major issues that should be seriously considered in the field of surgery.…”
