“…Also, our study controlled for multiple potential confounding factors. The fact that both studies have found similar results despite differences in study designs suggests that PC improves breast-feeding initiation not only in clinical trial settings (6)(7)(8)14) but in public health programme settings as well. In addition to finding a positive impact of the PC programme on breast-feeding initiation, our study also shows that the impact is highest among those who enrol in WIC for a longer duration before delivery.…”

“…Trials that used laypeople to deliver the intervention demonstrated a significant reduction in breastfeeding cessation at the time of the last study assessment (RR 0.86, 95% CI 0.76 to 0.98). 88,114,[354][355][356][357][358][359][360] Significant heterogeneity was present among these studies (I 2 = 75.6%). Further subgroup analysis did not reveal a statistically significant effect at any time point up to 4 months.…”

“…An important difference between the participants in our study compared with the 3 US RCTs was the much higher rate of breastfeeding initiation among WIC clients in our control group (94%) compared with the controls in each of 3 US RCTs. 17,23,24 Although this intervention was less intensive than other peer counseling experiments in the United States, the model in this study is not representative of peer counseling as practiced in many LWAs across the nation. Peer counselor activities were more closely controlled and monitored than what would occur in a nonstudy setting.…”

“…23,24 The third RCT had a smaller proportion of Hispanics. 17 Two of the RCTs found that peer counseling positively affected nonexclusive breastfeeding, but only 1 of the 3 studies reported gains in exclusive breastfeeding at 3 months.…”
