Effectiveness of an Intervention for Improving Intrinsic Motivation among Adolescent Males in a Secure Substance Use Treatment Setting

Abstract: Because intrinsic motivation affects substance use treatment engagement and outcomes, interventions to increase readiness for change are needed. The Treatment Readiness and Induction Program (TRIP) effectively increases intrinsic motivation among youth in community-based residential treatment, but its utility for youth in secure settings is unknown. The current study uses a sequential comparison design to examine the added benefit of TRIP over standard operating practice (SOP) among 125 male adolescents in a j… Show more

“…Multicomponent therapies have strong evidence for treating adolescent SUDs and some combinations of multicomponent therapy may have stronger evidence than others [9], indicating a need for further research as to what combinations of therapy can be most effective. Motivational interviewing (MI) is a strategy by which clinicians help to elicit behavioral change by targeting ambivalence and enhancing internal motivation of an individual, which can lead to a greater recognition of substance use problems and improve help-seeking [29]. Motivational enhancement therapy (MET) utilizes the same principles of motivational interviewing, however it is delivered in a more structured, manualized way.…”

“…In the one group design study, Knight et al (2019) conducted a sequential comparison design study to compare the effects of standard operating procedures (SOP) to The Treatment Readiness and Induction Program (TRIP; Bartholomew et al, 2013) for 125 incarcerated male youth. The types of drugs used by youth at least weekly and previous substance use treatment was noted.…”

“…The sole group design study (Knight et al, 2019) suffered from similar omissions in terms of quality indicators, including a lack of sufficient information provided to determine/confirm whether the participants demonstrated the disability(ies) or mental health diagnosis and a lack of appropriate procedures used to increase the likelihood that relevant characteristics of participants in the sample were comparable across conditions. Like almost all of the single subject studies, fidelity of implementation was not described nor assessed in the group design study.…”

“…In terms of behavioral interventions (see Gagnon et al, 2022, this special section), 10 studies have been published. It is noteworthy that all but one study (Knight et al, 2019) utilized SSRD, which resulted in only 162 male youth participants (see Table 3). It is also clear that interest This document is copyrighted by the American Psychological Association or one of its allied publishers.…”
