Effectiveness of an in‐office arginine‐calcium carbonate paste on dentine hypersensitivity in periodontitis patients: a double‐blind, randomized controlled trial

Abstract: The single in-office application of the 8% arginine-calcium carbonate desensitizing paste after scaling and root planing provided significant immediate reduction in dentine hypersensitivity, which sustained over a 6-week period.

“…The inter-group comparisons demonstrated significantly greater VAS and air-blast scores for the control group than the test group at all time points. This finding is in line with previous data which demonstrated the efficacy of the Pro-Argin TM Technology in controlling DRS symptoms (West et al 2015) following supragingival scaling (Hamlin et al 2009, Schiff et al 2009b, Tsai et al 2012) and NSPT (Pepelassi et al 2015). The desensitizing regimen based on the Pro-Argin TM Technology consisted of professional application of the prophylaxis paste after NSPT and before flap closure and twice daily use of the toothpaste throughout the study.…”

“…Although considerable placebo effects from control pastes have been reported in the literature (Addy & Dowell , Pepelassi et al. ), no such effects were found in the current study. The inactive placebo modulates negative emotions via verbal information which induces an expectation that the symptom will be reduced with a subsequent reduction (Flaten et al.…”

“…Pro-Argin containing 8% arginine–calcium carbonate is a proven in-office desensitizing paste that is effective in providing significant immediate reduction in dentine hypersensitivity for periodontitis patients [31]. However, the Colgate ® Sensitive Pro-Relief™ group showed no significant difference for the group right after treatment and immersion in artificial saliva for 14 days.…”

“…This section also includes a chapter on maxillomandibular anatomy, which illustrates a few of the highlights of 3D radiographic anatomy that will be seen on CBCT scans. 6 The Implant Therapy section of the book is the final section and begins with a chapter on the diagnosis and indications for implant therapy, including an evaluation of the amount and density of the bone available for implant therapy. The chapter on anatomy is titled "Radiological visualization of the anatomy of the facial skeleton" and includes a cursory review of only a few of the highlights of the maxillomandibular region and does not mention any of the anatomic features seen in CBVI scans outside the maxilla and mandible.…”
