The present study aimed to examine the impact of Virtual Writing Tutor (VWT) software on the academic writing skills of Year 1 Omani EFL students in the College of Applied Science, (CAS)-Sohar and their attitudes towards using VWT software to enhance their academic writing skills. The sample consisted of 35 students in the control group and 35 in the experimental group (Total N= 70) who were enrolled in the English for Academic Purposes (ENAP1002) course at CAS-Sohar. The data collection tools included pre-test and post-test for the two groups, and attitude scale for the experimental group. The findings of the study showed a positive large effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.88) of VWT on writing skills. In addition, Year 1 students in the experimental group enjoyed using the VWT software and found it beneficial and helpful in checking the accuracy of their essays including spelling, punctuation, grammar and vocabulary. In light of the research findings, implications and recommendations for future research were outlined.

Positive Effects of Video-based Projects on the Communicative English Grammar Lessons

The present study investigates positive effects of video-based projects on communicative English grammar lessons in the Vietnamese context. A mixed method was used in which the responses of forty Vietnamese learners from a center of English as a foreign language (EFL) were analyzed. The online questionnaires and individual interviews were applied for investigating the perceptions of the learners in the effectiveness of video-based projects in communicative grammar lessons. To measure the dependent variables of the study, the two grammar tests were given to the learners as a pre-test and post-test. The findings propose that implementing video-based projects in communicative instructions of English grammar enhances the learners’ interests and motivation. Generally, the participants show improvements in their English grammar performances. In addition, applications of video-based projects supported the English assessment following the communicative approach in the EFL context. Hopefully, it might be an effective platform for the development of the learners’ self-directed learning abilities and jointly prepare learners for the uncertain changes in the post-Covid-19 era as well.

Technology integration has a great impact on learners’ learning styles and everyday life, where various encouraging responses come across in language learning institutions through the use of mobile technology. WhatsApp application instantly transfers information in different modes. At the present time it can be effectively used as a platform to engage learners with conventional classroom setting. The present study is an attempt to investigate learners’ attitudes towards WhatsApp application and their intention for future use. 32 EFL learners were exposed to learn vocabulary by the use of WhatsApp application for a period of 6 weeks. Data were collected by using questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The result exhibited higher levels (M= 4.4 and Mode 4.37) of the mean scores of the learners’ perception and (M= 4.3) on WhatsApp Usage attitudes. The finding of the study indicated that learners expressed positive attitudes in using WhatsApp applications for vocabulary development. The present study also suggests that the integration of WhatsApp should be fortified to learners, instructors and institutions in developing other language learning process.
