Effectiveness and safety of the improved mini‐incision surgery for osmidrosis treatment

Abstract: Axillary Osmidrosis characterized by excessive foul odor is a disturbing problem that seriously interferes with the normal social life quality. 1 Ammonia and short-chain fatty acid production from bacterial decomposition of apocrine secretions leads to the bad smell. 2,3 Therefore, the key points of osmidrosis treatment are to remove apocrine glands, reduce gland secretion, or reduce bacterial aggregation. Despite multiple conservative and nonsurgical methods have been described, surgical removal of apocrine g… Show more

“…This approach is advocated in the literature for a broad spectrum of indications including: when there is a singular incidence of ingrown toenail with no underlying nail pathology; removal of fungal nail in preparation for treatment; and poor healing capacity [18]. In addition to specific clinical indications for this procedure, there is also increasing awareness of the post‐operative cosmetic appearance following nail surgery [19]. Given the breadth of indications for nail avulsion without matrixectomy, it seems surprising that 40% do not offer this option and suggests that matrixectomy may be over‐used in practice and there may be opportunities to improve the use of shared decision making in this process.…”

“…After decades of practice, Our department has proved that the treatment of bromhidrosis with rotary cutter combined with negative pressure suction through small incision 2 is superior to other surgical methods, 14 The use of rotary cutter can not only reduce scar contracture caused by skin scratch, but also reduce recurrence in the removal of sweat glands more thoroughly, and protect subdermal vascular network, it can greatly reduce necrosis, delayed healing, and other complications caused by poor blood supply of skin flap. 15 However, there are still a few possibilities of recurrence in blind operation. In order to find a more stable and effective minimally invasive bromhidrosis surgery, our department has carried out endoscope-assisted microdynamic bromhidrosis removal surgery.…”

“…Among these approaches, surgical removal of the apocrine glands is still the preferred method for osmidrosis treatment. Surgical treatments, however, are still limited by various complications such as paresthesia, scar contracture, local infection, hematoma, flap necrosis, and long recovery time 4 . Apart from invasive procedures, there are few minimally invasive surgery methods for patients with axillary scarring and residual glands.…”
