Effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a guided internet- and mobile-based depression intervention for individuals with chronic back pain: protocol of a multi-centre randomised controlled trial

Abstract: IntroductionDepression often co-occurs with chronic back pain (CBP). Internet and mobile-based interventions (IMIs) might be a promising approach for effectively treating depression in this patient group. In the present study, we will evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a guided depression IMI for individuals with CBP (eSano BackCare-D) integrated into orthopaedic healthcare. Methods and analysisIn this multicentre randomised controlled trial of parallel design, the groups eSano BackCare-D vers… Show more

“…Therefore, effectiveness studies aimed at the clinical target groups in the respective health care settings are needed. As an example, in two studies on an IMI for the treatment [ 89 ] and prevention [ 90 ] of depression in patients with back pain, recruitment took place following orthopedic rehabilitation. These studies were designed to reach the entire potential target population within a naturalistic setting where the aftercare IMI was implemented.…”

“…Sessions were planned on a weekly basis, and on rare occasions twice a week when indicated. Therapists were provided with a “library” of OTM on the platform based on modules of the Get.On interventions, which have been adapted to various target groups and evaluated in several randomized controlled trials in various samples ( Buntrock et al, 2017 , Buntrock et al, 2016 , Buntrock et al, 2015 , Buntrock et al, 2014 ; Ebert et al, 2017a , Ebert et al, 2017c , Ebert et al, 2014 ; Lin et al, 2017 ; Nobis et al, 2015 ; Reins et al, 2013 ; Sander et al, 2017 ). OTM were clustered in blocks consisting each of several individual lessons regarding specific therapeutic phases such as psychoeducation, goal setting, behavioural activation, cognitive restructuring and relapse prevention.…”
