Effective wipe detection in MPEG compressed video using macro block type information

Abstract: For video scene analysis, the wipe transition is considered most complex and difficult to detect. In this paper, an effective wipe detection method is proposed using the macroblock (MB) information of the MPEG compressed video. By analyzing the prediction directions of B frames, which are revealed in the MB types, the scene change region of each frame can be found. Once the accumulation of the scene change regions covers most area of the frame, the sequence will be considered a motionless wipe transition seque… Show more

“…Therefore, motion activity-based methods were proposed to detect scene transition patterns in several existing methods. Macroblock (MB) type temporal information was used specifically to detect wipe transition patterns in [44]. The primary limitation of this method was sensitivity to the brightness and illumination changes.…”

“…Some studies have proposed macroblock type temporal feature information analysis in the MPEG coded domain to locate wipe scene changes [16] [30]. However, they suffer from a high false alarm rate due to illumination and brightness changes.…”

“…• Wipe transitions carry important low-level semantic information of the context and content of a video to obtain high-level information; hence, their automatic detection is a pivotal step in assisting content-based video analysis [13] [16]. • Wipe transitions are widely used in digital media (news, sports, and movies) to provide audiences with a better content-watching experience [12].…”
