Effective Removal of Odorants in Gaseous Fuel for the Hydrogen Station Using Hydrodesulfurization and Adsorption

Abstract: The removal efficiency of dimethyl sulfide (DMS), tert-butylmercapatan (TBM), and tetrahydo thiophene (THT) was investigated for applying to hydrogen station. The sorbents such as Cu/Al 2 O 3 , ZnO/Al 2 O 3 , Cu/ ZnO, and Cu/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 were prepared by the coprecipitation method and characterized by XRD, surface area, and pore size distribution measurements. Among the various sorbents employed for the removal sulfur compounds, the Cu/ZnO/Al 2 O 3 exhibits superior activity compared to the conventional ZnO so… Show more

“…In addition to H 2 S, other impurities are known as irreversible poisons for the Cu/ZnO system like other sulfur compounds, metal carbonyls, trivalent phosphorus, and halides, which can also be present in the exhaust gases . Examples of standard sulfur impurities are tert ‐butyl mercaptan (TBM), tetrahydro thiophene (THT), and dimethyl disulfide (DMS) . However, H 2 S is the most aggressive poison compared with other investigated sulfur components, since the breaking of a C – S bond needs more energy relative to H – S bonds to form metal sulfide species .…”

“…The generated hydrogen sulfide is then removed from the gas stream via adsorption processes. Hydrogen sulfide adsorbers used for this purpose provide high sulfur adsorption capacity and lead to long maintenance intervals [3][4][5]. Unfortunately, HDS also has some disadvantages compared to the frequently used cold adsorptive desulfurization (ADS) at ambient temperature.…”

“…These sulfur-containing odour materials not only corrode the infrastructure, but also caused ill or sick to the people around. In fact, among the odour substances, H 2 S is often the main and most often seen chemical causing the uncomfortable feeling and needs control first [5,[9][10][11]. The other organic sulfur compounds, such as thiophene, carbonyl sulfide, are normally much less than H 2 S, but also possess a much stronger smell [5,8,12].…”
