Effective penetration depths of a thin type-II superconducting strip

Abstract: The current and field profiles and the perpendicular susceptibility of a thin type-II superconducting strip of thickness t and width 2a in the Meissner state are calculated numerically by minimizing the sum of magnetic and kinetic energies. In terms of the two-dimensional screening length Λ = 2λ2/t, where λ is the London penetration depth, proposed by Pearl, effective penetration depths with respect to the field and current, λeff,H and λeff,I, are introduced. It is found that λeff,H/a≈1.18(Λ/a)0.49 and λeff… Show more

“…Numerical calculations with λ > 0 can account for the sheet current density in some thin geometries under perpendicular applied fields. [18][19][20][21][22] The above-mentioned results have been widely used as theoretical frameworks for investigating superconductors, ranging from studies of flux penetration in mesoscopic superconductors to the macroscopic characterization of bulk superconductors. In the present paper, we extend the previous results by considering two-dimensional arrays of superconducting thin strips exposed to perpendicular fields, and we offer a theoretical framework for a new class of superconducting systems, dc magnetic metamaterials.…”

“…In order to calculate the fields B z produced by the whole sample and by the individual grains solenoids we take their thicknesses as the inter-and intragranular effective penetration depths Λ i (T) and Λ g (T), respectively, as shown in figure A1(b). These are given by [34,66,67]…”

“…Such a border between superconducting (S) and normal (N) media is called the London penetration depth [1]. In thin superconducting films with flowing current this property leads to a concentration of the current at the edges of the film, characterized by a distance called the Pearl length [2,3]. For II-type high temperature superconductors (HTSC), critical magnetic fields H c1 and H c2 exist.…”
