Effective Matrix Acidizing Based in Chelating Agents: A Case Study in Romanian Heavy Oil Reservoirs

Abstract: Heavy and extra-heavy crude oil reservoirs hold physicochemical characteristics that can frequently turn their operation into a technical and economic challenge. Typically, heating techniques are used to decrease oil viscosity. Areas with steam injection are susceptible to developing formation damage mechanisms such as scale precipitation that gradually restricts the flow of fluid towards the wellbore and ultimately decreases overall well productivity and/or injectivity. Acidizing treatments to either remove o… Show more

“…Suplacu de Barcau Oilfield in Romania, which has been operated since 1960, is one of the most successful commercial ISC projects in the world. , The oilfield is a heavy oil and shallow reservoir. The well pattern was initially five-spot with a central injection well and further expanded into a nine-spot pattern.…”

“…More recently, a similar system was applied to offshore wells in West Africa and showed an improvement of 48% to production rates. 156 Panait et al 157 investigated the application of GLDA as a matrix acidizing fluid in Romanian heavy oil fields and observed an improvement in the performance of the wells. GLDA was also used at pH 10 as a scale remover to treat wells damaged by iron, calcium, and magnesium scale.…”

“…Recent studies by leaders in this field show that optimizing the most basic of the parameters to enhance the efficiency of wormhole propagation is still far from being an old topic. Field operators still attempt different methods, including testing various chemicals and designing jobs with enormous volumes of acid injection to achieve enhancement in well productivity . In addition, extensive pre- and post-flush jobs are applied to obtain the most out of acid injection . Most of this is designed to minimize damage as a result of emulsion and sludge formation.…”
