Effective indoor air quality for energy-efficient homes: a comparison of UK rating systems

Abstract: The use of sustainable assessment methods in the UK is on the rise, anticipating the future regulatory trajectory towards zero carbon by 2016. The indisputable influence of sustainable rating tools on UK building regulations conveys the importance of evaluating their effectiveness in achieving true sustainable design, without adversely effecting human health and wellbeing. This paper reviews indoor air-quality (IAQ) issues addressed by UK sustainable assessment tools, and the potential trade-offs between build… Show more

“…In winter, the dwellings remain closed most of the day. However, during mild seasons, the windows-or some windows at least-are almost continuously open, and this is also frequent during the summer-except during high temperatures-as different studies have previously established [17,32]. This scenario plays a vital role in the pollution-situation of the indoor atmosphere, with a more direct relationship between both environments, stronger than that found in colder areas.…”

“…In Europe, it is worth noting studies from the UK, Denmark, Macedonia, and Slovakia which research the indoor air quality in family homes. In the UK, McGill [19,31,32] investigated the differences in indoor air quality between mechanical and naturally ventilated homes, including Passivhaus dwellings.…”

“…This framework has been adopted by a few heritage institutions at district and state levels with some changes made to refine the process and method in interpreting the criteria of OUV in order to suit the local character (Cadw, However, limited studies have investigated the appropriateness of the recommended measurement scale by HIA to meet the changes of general criteria and indicators to adopt local context needs. There is also a concern on the reliability of the assessment methodology of HIA ICOMOS; it has been suggested that the tool should present a method to present a comprehensive view of subject value and balance the weighting among criteria and b) Two rows of squatters in Jalan Raja Alang,Kampong Bharu were burnt in fire Journal of Surveying, Construction and Property (JSCP) Volume 10, 2019 Issue 1 ISSN: 1985-7527 indicators (Kamaruzzaman, Nawawi, Husin, & Hashim, 2015Mcgill, Oyedele, Mcallister, & Qin, 2015). Unlike the assessment methodology by established measurement tools, the current HIA frameworks are lacking in terms of criteria weighting, which plays a vital role of highlighting priority between criteria (Khalil, 2013;Khalil et al, 2015).…”

“…Based on this discussion, the credibility of an assessment tool framework is basically expressed by its assessment methodology in achieving the target of the tool. Assessment methodology is important at generating reliable result because it presents a comprehensive view of subject value and balanced weighting among the criteria and indicators (Khalil et al, 2015;Mcgill et al, 2015). Meanwhile,…”
