Effective immuno-therapeutic treatment of Canine Leishmaniasis

Abstract: Background Canine Leishmaniasis (CanL) caused by the L. infantum species is one of the biggest threats to the health of the South American canine population. Chemotherapeutics currently used for the treatment of CanL fail to induce a total parasite clearance while inducing numerous side effects. As CanL is an immunomodulated disease, the use of immuno-treatments should strengthen the deficient immune response of infected dogs. In this study, we evaluated a nasally administered immunotherapy in dogs naturally i… Show more

“…A 3-month study was conducted on naturally infected dogs in Brazil. Two nasal administrations, two weeks apart, induced a decrease in the parasite burden in both the skin and the bone marrow, and also sharply decreased the infection-related humoral response [ 84 ]. A slight improvement in the clinical scoring was also observed, although the dogs had other infections, and no side effects were reported.…”

“…A slight improvement in the clinical scoring was also observed, although the dogs had other infections, and no side effects were reported. Overall, the immunotreatment was safer and at least as efficient as the current Brazilian chemotherapy protocol, based on 28 oral administrations of milteforan over a period of one month [ 84 , 85 ].…”
