Effective Control of Road Luminaires—A Case Study on an Example of a Selected City in Poland

Abstract: According to various estimates, street lighting in Poland consumes between 1.500 and 2.500 GWh per year and is responsible for some greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation. Also on the basis of estimates, it is estimated that approximately 3.3 million road and street luminaires are used in Poland. The increase in electricity costs, on the one hand, and the technical possibilities in the field of lighting, on the other, force the search for new solutions aimed at saving during the operation of elec… Show more

“…Identifying third-party entities is a critical aspect of this process. The scripts leverage the tldextract [15] Python package to remove public suffixes (e.g., ".com", ".co.uk") from URLs and compare the resulting domain names. URLs with different subdomains are considered as belonging to the same parent third-party entity, enabling a comprehensive analysis of tracking activities across multiple subdomains.…”

“…Designers do not take into account the control and ignore the harmonic components of lighting fixtures' supply current, which may result in incorrect operation of such installations and even their damage. Current distortions may not only be higher than the current standards allow but, in extreme cases, may be so large that they cause various types of failures [28,29]. In the further parts of the article, the authors describe such cases and the results of measurements in the tested lighting installations.…”

“…All these solutions should meet the relevant provisions of the standards regarding their parameters and working conditions [33]. Quoting from [34], the course of the power supply of LED luminaires and modules is shaped by a switched-mode power supply. An example of such waveforms without harmonic filter systems is shown in Figure 4.…”

“…The first such sector in which passive compensators have been used for many years almost without interruption is street lighting [31][32][33][34][35]. Although there has been a rapid expansion in the use of LED lighting worldwide [36,37], passive systems are still being implemented. Only the design of the compensator has changed, as, previously, capacitors were used for compensation, while now, due to the capacitive nature of reactive power generated by electronic systems, chokes are installed [35,36].…”
