Effective Adsorption and Sensitive Detection of Cr(VI) by Chitosan/Cellulose Nanocrystals Grafted with Carbon Dots Composite Hydrogel

Abstract: Due to its lethal effect on the human body and other creatures, Cr(VI) ions have attained widespread public attention, and an effective adsorbent for removing Cr(VI) ions is vital. Chitosan (CS)/cellulose nanocrystals grafted with carbon dots (CNCD) composite hydrogel with strong sorption ability and sensitive detection ability for Cr(VI) was formed. The cellulose nanocrystals (CN) offered a natural skeleton for assembling 3D porous structures, and then improved the sorption ability for Cr(VI); moreover, carbo… Show more

“…These results indicate that α–FeO(OH)/GOCS microsphere had a good effect on Cr(VI) adsorption. Other similar chitosan-based composites, such as 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate modified CS (CS- [BMIM] [OAc], 125.63 mg/g) [ 31 ] and CS/cellulose nanocrystals/carbon dots composite (CNCD, 217.80 mg/g) [ 70 ], show a higher q m value than α–FeO(OH)/GOCS prepared in this study; these provided references for further optimization of the adsorption properties.…”

“…These results indicate that α-FeO(OH)/GOCS microsphere had a good effect on Cr(VI) adsorption. Other similar chitosan-based composites, such as 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate modified CS (CS-[BMIM] [OAc], 125.63 mg/g) [31] and CS/cellulose nanocrystals/carbon dots composite (CNCD, 217.80 mg/g) [70], show a higher q m value than α-FeO(OH)/GOCS prepared in this study; these provided references for further optimization of the adsorption properties. It was worth noting that the α-FeO(OH)/GOCS microsphere also had abundant functional groups, such as C-O, C = C, -CH, -OH, -NH 2 , and Fe-O, so it could be expected to remove other metal ions, organic pollutants, dyes, etc.…”

“…Various biomass such as orange peels and prickly pear can be used to prepare carbon quantum dots or doped carbon dots for Cr (vi) sensing or photosensitizer-related applications [ 41 , 42 ]. Other CDs synthesized by microwave-assisted synthesis can be used as fluorescent ink, logic gate operation, and probes to detect various analytes such as ammonia, Cr (VI), ascorbic acid, copper, and etidronate disodium [ 43 , 44 , 45 ].…”

“…Over the last decades, fluorescent nanoparticles have gained extensive focusing as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions due to their high surface area, good chemical stability, and efficient adsorption capacity (Zeng et al 2021). As one of the promising fluorescent carbon-based nanomaterials, carbon dots (CDs) have currently gathered a significant scientific attention for their spectacular characteristics such as biocompatibility, photoluminescence, and wide variety of carbon precursors used (Issa et al 2020a).…”
