Effect of ZrO2 Addition on Densification and Mechanical Properties of MgAl2O4–CaAl4O7–CaAl12O19 Composite

Abstract: Although the platelet structure of calcium hexaluminate (CaAl12O19, or CA6) grains can strengthen and toughen the Al2O3–MgO–CaO system materials designed in the high‐alumina region, it also results in poor densification and subsequent accelerated slag penetration for refractory application. Considering this aspect, MgAl2O4–CaAl4O7–CaAl12O19 composite was fabricated by solid‐state reaction sintering in this work, and the effect of ZrO2 addition on densification and mechanical properties was investigated. “…The volume expansion of CAB and RMB castables was mainly due to the in situ formation of calcium aluminates (Figure 4E,F) and Mg(Al, Cr) 2 O 4 spinel (Figures 4A,B), respectively, accompanied by volume expansion. Since the volume expansion brought by the in situ formation of calcium aluminates (13.6% CaO·2Al 2 O 3 and 3.6% CA 6 ) 26–29 was higher than that of in situ spinel (8%), 1,20,30 a larger PLC of CAB castable had been achieved. This result suggested that the volume stability of RMB castable was better than that of CAB.…”

“…Calcium hexaaluminate with the formula CaO·6Al 2 O 3 is the phase containing the highest Al 2 O 3 content in CaO–Al 2 O 3 system. Owing to the excellent overall performance including light weight, high melting point, excellent strength, good thermal shock resistance, and good thermal insulation, CA 6 has become one of the classic refractories in recent years 2–5 …”

“…In our previous work, CaO‐MgO‐Al 2 O 3 materials were prepared with industrial waste residue as the raw material 12 . Those materials possessed a significantly lower thermal expansion coefficient than that of MgO, 13 therefore, they are an appropriate additive to improving the thermal shock resistance of LCMC. Compared to MA‐CA 6 material, LCMC with better properties were obtained when MA‐CA 2 material was added.…”
