Mg-Zn-Zr series Mg alloys (ZK) are one of the most important commercial Mg alloys due to their good comprehensive mechanical properties. The phase equilibria of the Mg-Zn-Zr system at 400°C covering the overall composition range were investigated by X-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalyses on thirteen ternary alloys. Three ternary compounds, s 1 , s 2 and s 3 , were detected to be thermodynamically stable at 400°C, and their homogeneity range was determined to be Mg (7-17) Zn (80-88) Zr (4-6) , Mg (15-22) Zn (66-68) Zr (9-16) and Mg 9 Zn 68 Zr 23 (in at.%), respectively. Eight three-phase regions and four two-phase regions were observed. The maximum solubility of Mg in Zn 22 Zr, Zn 39 Zr 5 and Zn 3 Zr phases was measured to be 0.52, 0.37 and 0.99 at.%, respectively, while the solubility of Zr in MgZn 2 and Mg 2 Zn 3 phases is negligible. The isothermal section of the Mg-Zn-Zr system at 400°C was then constructed based on the present experimental data.

“…Filler strips of pure Mg and Al containing alloys lead to grain coarsening in the welds and thus contribute to the inferior mechanical properties of the joints. Although no evident grain coarsening occurs in welds filled with ZK21 and ZK60 alloy, the UTS of these joints 20 Owning to fine grains in weld, a high quality joint is obtained when the filler strip of ZK40 is employed, and it possesses the highest UTS of 322 MPa and good elongation of 6?5%, which are up to 90?7 and 63?8% respectively of those of the base metal. Besides, the elongations of the joints filled with ZK series alloys are increased as the Zn content of the filler strips decreases.…”

The highly crack susceptible magnesium alloy ZK60 plates of 2 mm thickness were successfully welded by laser beam welding (LBW) with filler strip, which has the advantages of low heat input and capability of adjusting the compositions of weld metal to a less susceptible level. The effects of the compositions of filler strips on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the joints were investigated. Compared with autogenous LBW, LBW with filler strip can produce a narrower joint and avoid the cracks and pits, which severely worsen mechanical properties of the joints. When the filler strip of ZK40 alloy is employed, the grains in fusion zone can be refined, and a high quality joint, with the ultimate tensile strength of 322 MPa up to 90?7% of the base metal, is obtained.
