Effect of Zirconium Oxide Nano-Fillers Addition on Mechanical Properties of Heat-Polymerized Acrylic Resin

Abstract: One way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's tests were used for testing the significance between the means of tested groups which are statistically significant when the P value ≤ 0.05. Results: Addition of Zirconium oxide nanofillers to PMMA significantly increased the flexural strength, fracture toughness and hardness. Conclusion:These results indicate that Zirconium oxide nanofillers added to PMMA has a potential as a reliable denture base material with increased flexural strength, fracture toughness, a… Show more

“…% loading, after that it showed gradually decreasing trend with further content increase, as indicated in Figure 3. This may be due to complete saturation of the polymer matrix with Al2O3 NWs and ZrO2 NPs, or may be the weak interaction between Al2O3 NWs after 0.5 wt.% and ZrO2 NPs after 0.7 wt.% with PMMA, that leads to less effective stress transfer between PMMA and the reinforcement materials [22,28,40] .…”

“…Also, using mixture of ZrO 2 / TiO 2 22 introduced higher property values. Al 2 O 3, Zr 2 O 3 , and SiO 2 were used as nano-filler for nanocomposite denture base 23,24 . Titanium dioxide is one of the best nanoparticles used by researchers in the medical field due to its unique characteristic.…”

“…(1) However, this material is still deficient to achieve the ideal mechanical requirements for dental applications, mainly due to its low fracture resistance and plaque accumulation. (2,3) Different fillers, metal oxides, and carbon graphite fibers are blended into the composition to improve the mechanical properties of the resin. (4,5) One of the most promising newly used fillers to overcome strength deficiency is the addition of nanoparticles into PMMA to act as the reinforcing material.…”
