Background: Pneumonia is one of the leading causes of mortality among under-five children contributing to 15% of deaths all over the world. More than 95% of all new cases of pneumonia in children less than 5 years occur in developing countries. The aim of this study is to evaluate the socio-demographic characteristics, clinical profile, laboratory parameters and management of hospitalized children presenting with pneumonia. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 178 children aged between 02-59 months who were admitted into Paediatrics ward of Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Jashore during the period of July 2020 to December 2021were evaluated. Data were collected by a trained physician from history, clinical examinations, laboratory findings and chest x-ray immediately after admission using a structured questionnaire with purposive sampling technique. All x-ray films were evaluated by radiologist and paediatrician independently. Results: A total of 178 cases suffering from pneumonia were studied. Among them majority (87.08%) of children were below 36 months of age with the highest frequency of pneumonia was seen bellow 12 months (42.70%) age group. 112(62.92%) patients were male and 66(37.08%) patients were female with male-female ratio 1.7:1. Most of the patients were of normal birth weight (81.46%), fully immunized (84.27%), better maternal education, from nuclear family (81.46%) and were exclusive breast feed (70.22%). Fever, cough, breathing difficulty, tachypnoea and crackles were present nearly all patients with pneumonia. Chest x-ray suggestive of bronchopneumonia in most of the cases (91.01%). All patients received antibiotics, duration of hospital stay ranged from 03 to 14 days, mean stay was about 05 days. Nearly all the patients (97.52%) were recovered and discharged with advice. Conclusion: Most of the patients with pneumonia were below 36 months of age with male predominance. Fever, cough, fast or difficult breathing were as a feature of pneumonia. Prompt administration of antibiotics to children with pneumonia significantly reduces the morbidity and mortality. Bangladesh Armed Forces Med J Vol 56 No (2) December 2023, pp 31-37

Background: One of the most important trace elements is zinc. Proliferating cells throughout the body, and the immune system in particular, rely heavily on zinc. Humans have between 2 to 4 micro grammes of zinc in their bodies, with about 95% of that amount being located within their cells. Although zinc is found in all bodily tissues and fluids, about 57% of the body pool is kept in skeletal muscles, 29% in bone, and 6% in skin. Objective: Review of literature about zinc possible correlation with pneumonia. Methods: We searched Science Direct, Google Scholar as well as PubMed for relevant articles on Zinc as well as Pneumonia. Only the most recent or thorough study was taken into account between May 2001 and April 2023. The authors also evaluated the value of resources culled from other works in the same genre. Therefore, documents written in languages other than English have been ignored due to a lack of translation funds. Unpublished works, oral presentations, conference abstracts, and dissertations were generally agreed upon not to qualify as scientific research. Conclusion: Zinc transporters control the levels of zinc in lung tissue, where it binds mostly to metallothionein (MT). Cigarette smoke contains significant concentrations of cadmium (Cd), a hazardous heavy metal and carcinogen, and ZIP8, a zinc transporter, is the primary entry site for Cd. Zinc lowers the cytotoxicity of Cd to alveolar epithelial cells after inhalation of Cd-containing gas by competing with Cd for binding to ZIP8 protein. Preventative zinc supplementation can lessen the likelihood of contracting pneumonia. Zinc supplementation has been shown to reduce the severity and duration of pneumonia.

Background Pneumonia is a critical global health concern that often results in severe complications and fatalities, especially among young children. Zinc plays a crucial role in immune function and maintaining respiratory epithelial integrity. Despite its importance, data on the prevalence of zinc deficiency and its impact on pneumonia severity in Vietnamese children are limited. Objectives This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of zinc deficiency and its association with pneumonia severity in Vietnamese children under five years old. The findings could significantly contribute to our understanding of the role of zinc in pneumonia severity, guiding future public health interventions, nutritional policies, and clinical practices to prevent zinc deficiency and reduce pneumonia morbidity and mortality in children. Methods An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted at a major pediatric center in Southwestern Vietnam from December 2022 to February 2024, involving 222 children aged 2 to 59 months diagnosed with pneumonia. Clinical assessments and laboratory measurements, including serum zinc levels, were performed. Statistical analyses were conducted to compare clinical characteristics and outcomes between zinc-deficient and non-deficient groups. Multivariable logistic regression was used to assess the association between zinc deficiency and pneumonia severity, with statistical significance set at p<0.05. Results The prevalence of zinc deficiency among children with pneumonia was 74.3%. Zinc-deficient children showed a significantly higher proportion of severe pneumonia (57.6% vs. 8.8%, p<0.001), as well as a higher proportion of high fever, poor feeding, vomiting, and respiratory distress compared to non-deficient children (p<0.001). Multivariable logistic regression identified zinc deficiency as an independent predictor of severe pneumonia (aOR=13.1, 95% CI: 4.7-36.8, p<0.001). Conclusion Zinc deficiency was prevalent among Vietnamese children with pneumonia and was associated with an increased risk of severe pneumonia.
