One of the most common prophylactic techniques to solve prosthetic joint infection (PJI) is incorporation of antibiotics into acrylic bone cement to prevent bacterial colonization and proliferation by providing local antibiotic delivery directly at the implant site. Further, there has been a significant concern over the efficacy of commonly used antibiotics within bone cement due to the rise in multi-drug resistant (MDR) microorganisms. Selenium is an essential trace element that has multiple beneficial effects for human health and its chemotherapeutic action is well known. It was reported that nanostructured selenium enhanced bone cell adhesion and has an increased osteoblast function. In this context, we used the selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) to improve antibacterial and antioxidant properties of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and tri calcium phosphate (TCP)-based bone cements, and to reduce of the infection risk caused by orthopedic implants. As another novelty of this study, we proposed phosphatidylcholine (PC) as a unique and natural stabilizer in the synthesis of selenium nanoparticles. After the structural analysis of the prepared bone cements was performed, in vitro osteointegration and antibacterial efficiency were tested using MC3T-E1 (mouse osteoblastic cell line) and SaOS-2 (human primary osteogenic sarcoma) cell lines, and S. aureus (Gram positive) and E.coli (Gram negative) strains, respectively. More importantly, PC-SeNPs-reinforced bone cements exhibited significant effect against E. coli, compared to S. aureus and a dose-dependent antibacterial activity against both bacterial strains tested. Meanwhile, these bone cements induced the apoptosis of SaOS-2 through increased reactive oxygen species without negatively influencing the viability of the healthy cell line. Furthermore, the obtained confocal images revealed that PC-SeNPs (103.7 ± 0.56 nm) altered the cytoskeletal structure of SaOS-2 owing to SeNPs-induced apoptosis, when MC3T3-E1 cells showed a typical spindle-shaped morphology. Taken together, these results highlighted the potential of PC-SeNPs-doped bone cements as an effective graft material in bone applications.

One of the most promising CAD/CAM approaches is milling denture base materials from highly condensed pre-polymerized resin discs. In an effort to overcome the disadvantages of acrylic resin denture base materials, nano-filler materials have been added as well as denture base chemistry adjusted to strengthen the denture base.This eliminates disadvantages associated with polymerization shrinkage compared to conventional heat-cured acrylic resin. Aim of this study: evaluate the surface roughness of PMMA acrylic resin after strengthening the denture- base by addition of zinc oxide nano-filler material to acrylic resin PMMA with concentration (1%) and compare with milled CAD/CAM and non-modified heat-cured PMMA denture base materials. Materials and methods: thirty specimens of acrylic resin PMMA were prepared and divided into three groups 10 specimens for each groups as follows; Control Group (Group1) without ZnO nanoparticles ; Group (2) with (1%) by weight of ZnO nanoparticles ; Group (3) milled CAD/CAM.Each specimen is of dimension ( 10 x 10 x 3 ) in mm and was fabricated using conventional processing method and milling the CAD/CAM blocks .Results: showed the lowest mean value was recorded by milled CAD/CAM (0.230 Ra) Then the non-significant reduction with mean value (0.312 Ra) by PMMA+ ZnO 1% and highest mean value of surface roughness was recorded by pure PMMA without additive (0.327 Ra).Conclusions: There were significant differences between control group PMMA and milled (CAD/CAM) with slight reduction of surface roughness of PMMA with (1%) Zno nanoparticles.

Objective The purpose of this study was to fabricate bisphenol-a glycidyl methacrylate /tri-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA)-based nano and micro-sized-filled dental composite and to study the effect of varying silane-treated nano hydroxyapatite on physical, mechanical and thermal properties. Methods The dental resin matrix was fabricated by bisphenol-a glycidyl (53 wt.%), TEGDMA (46 wt.%), camphorquinone (0.3 wt.%) and 2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate (0.7 wt.%). Silane-treated nano hydroxyapatite (nHA) filler content was varied from 0 to 8 wt.%, while zinc oxide (microsized) remains constant with 20 wt.%. A light curing unit was employed for polymerization of the resinous dental mixture. Results The result revealed that infrared spectra of untreated and treated nHA filler particles were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The dental composite filled with 6 wt.% nHA (DHZ6) exhibited maximum compressive strength (249 MPa) and Vickers hardness (49 Hv), while dental composite filled with 8 wt.% nHA (DHZ8) showed minimum depth of cure (5.12 mm), degree of conversion (54%) and polymerization shrinkage (1.12%). Significance Silane treatment of nano hydroxyapatite has a significant role in physical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Bonding strength of coupling agent has been seen between organic and inorganic materials.
