Effect of Zinc-Carnosine Chelate Compound (Z-103), A Novel Antioxidant, on Acute Gastric Mucosal Injury Induced by Ischemia-Reperfusion in Rats

Abstract: The protective effect of a novel synthetic zinc-carnosine chelate compound, zinc N-(3-aminopropionyl)-L-histidine (Z-103), on the gastric mucosal injury induced by ischemia-reperfusion was studied in rats. Ischemia and reperfusion injury was produced on the rat stomach by applying a small clamp to the celiac artery for 30 min and by removal of the clamp for 30 min. The decrease in the gastric mucosal blood flow was not influenced by the treatment with Z-103. The increase in total area of the erosions on the st… Show more

“…In vivo, Z-103 also has been reported to be effective in the treatment of acute gastric injuries [20,21] In the present study, the dose of Z-103 was less than the reported toxic level [22,23] and no apparent side effects were noticed. Z-103 was as effective in the treat ment of colitis as SASP, which frequently has been used clinically.…”

“…In ischemia-reperfusion injury of the stomach, superoxide and hydroxyl radicals are consid ered as the major reactive oxygen radicals. The xanthine-xanthine oxidase system in the gastric mucosal microcirculation is the main source of superoxide radicals, which subse quently produce hydroxyl radicals via the Fenton reaction in the stomach [28][29][30]. In the light of the aforementioned, we used the xanthine-xanthine oxidase system as the source of superoxide radicals and lipid peroxi dation system induced by hydroxyl radicals in vitro.…”
