Effect of Wood Surface Modification by Atmospheric-Pressure Plasma on Waterborne Coating Adhesion

Abstract: In this study, the effect of an atmospheric-pressure plasma treatment on the surface properties of sugar maple (Acer saccharum March.) and black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) was analyzed by contact angle measurement and a water-based coating pull-off testing. The plasma gases used were Ar, N2, CO2, and air. It was found that the wettability with water and the coating adhesion of maple and spruce can be highly influenced by the nature of the plasma gas used and the plasma treatment time. For example, in the ca… Show more

“…In the different heat treatment application, coating hardness and scratch resistance decreased for the all wood species. Rield et al (2014) used to determine the effect of atmospheric pressure plasma treatment on wood surface coating performance using contact angle measurement and pull off testing. The results showed that type of plasma gases and treatment time were significant factors on the wettability and adhesion strength for maple and spruce wood samples.…”

“…1. This system was described in details in a previous publication (Prégent et al 2014;Riedl et al 2013). The system is open to ambient air and produces a spatially uniform or filamentary discharge between two quartzcovered circular metallic electrodes, having an area of 285 cm 2 , a diameter of 19 cm, and a 0.14 cm interelectrode gap.…”
