Effect of Water Vapor on Dielectric Loss in MgO

Abstract: [9] 491-92 (1965).tragonal Tungsten Trioxidc," J. .Ipp/. Phys.. 23 [2] 212-15 (1952).A dielectric loss study of porous MgO indicates that HrO absorption on MgO probably leads to the formation of surface defects as well as hydroxide ions. The ac conductivity, followed the equation us = uI + K P H~~O -~ from 550" to 800°C when the water partial pressure was varied between 7 X lo-' and 3 X lo-* atm.

“…This analysis shows that N^ or O^ contamination does not degrade charge retention, and postulates that HjO contamination does produce a charge-leaky hydrated MgO surface. The latter conclusion is in agreement with the findings of Johnson et al [19].…”

“…(a) removal of physically adsorbed water (with an activation energy for desorption of 0.9 eV), at temperatures up to 3 6 0 C (the effect of physisorbed moisture on resistivity has also been observed on polycrystalline specimens [4,10] (b) persistence of chemisorbed hydroxyl ions, particularly at more active MgO crystal sites [32] with activation energies for desorption of 2.6 eV or higher, at temperatures up to 900°C (well beyond the typical decomposition temperature of 395°CforMg(OH) 2 ) (c) slow recovery of bound water, after high-temperature desorption, by resorption on cooling followed by reaction to form hydroxyl ions, with accompanying cation vacancies; this reaction has been suggested [30] to account for the effect of water vapour on conductivity in MgO powders at high temperatures, and also for its well known effect in accelerating the sintering of active magnesias [31] by facilitating surface diffusion.…”

“…20,25 A partir dos resultados obtidos, fica evidente que a capacidade de adsorção de CO 2 pode ser significativamente afetada pelo processo (tempo) de moagem. A quantidade total e irreversível de CO 2 , determinada para o MgO de partida foi de 3,0 e 2,15 μmol/m 2 , respectivamente.…”
