Effect of water vapor on the oxidation behavior of HVAF‐sprayed NiCr and NiCrAlY coatings

Abstract: Isothermal oxidation behavior of NiCr and NiCrAlY coatings deposited onto low alloy 16Mo3 steel by high‐velocity air fuel (HVAF) process was investigated in 5% O2 + 20% H2O + N2 at 600 °C for 168 h. Whereas NiCrAlY showed lower mass gain compared to NiCr, both coatings succeeded in maintaining the integrity with the substrate during the exposure without any breakaway oxidation. A thin Cr‐rich oxide scale (Cr2O3) formed on NiCr, and a thin mixed oxide scale (Al2O3 with NiCr2O4) formed on NiCrAlY significantly i… Show more

“…1. (Mass gains of NiCr and NiCrAlY coatings are the same as presented in [11].) A 304L bulk sample was exposed for reference and exhibited a lower mass gain compared to the coated samples and was close to 0 mg/cm 2 (slightly negative value possibly due to Cr evaporation).…”

“…The performance of HVAF-sprayed NiCr and NiCrAlY coatings in water vapourcontaining environment was therefore recently investigated by exposing them in 5% O 2 + 20% H 2 O + N 2 (bal.) at 600 °C for 168 h [11]. It was shown that both coatings formed thin protective oxides in the nanometre range.…”

“…For many years, the group's research focus was oriented towards the development of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) primarily for aero-engine and land-based gas turbine applications [6][7][8][9]. The addition of ASPS and HVAF facilities in the past few years, along with the growing expertise of the team, has enabled expansion of the research base further into new areas of wear [10], corrosion [11], and repair [12]. Initial efforts to develop biocompatible [13], hydrophobic [14], and luminescent coatings [15] have also yielded extremely encouraging results.…”
