Effect of warm air-drying on dentin bond strength of single-step self-etch adhesives

Abstract: The effect of warm air-drying on the dentin bond strengths of the single-step self-etch adhesives was determined. The adhesives were applied to bovine dentin followed by drying in a stream of warm air for 5, 10, and 15 s at 37°C. Resin composites were condensed into a mold and polymerized. Specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h, then shear tested. The surface free-energies were determined by measuring the contact angles of three test liquids placed on the cured adhesives. The dentin bond str… Show more

“…Another simple approach to improve bonding efficacy and stability is to enhance solvent evaporation. Warm airdrying of the adhesive may help remove interfacial water and improve bonding effectiveness (84). Cavity geometry is also an important issue and usually differs from the flat adherent surface used in tests of bond strength.…”

“…In addition, the solvent in Adper Single Bond 2 is based on ethanol, which reduces viscosity 23 . Studies of acetone-based adhesives may present different results since the higher vapor pressure of acetone increases solvent evaporation 22,24 . Furthermore, 37% phosphoric acid etching completely removes the smear layer and changes the energy surface of dentin 2 .…”

“…The explanation for this distinct behavior is probably linked to the vapor pressure of acetone, which is higher than that of ethanol, positively affecting solvent evaporation 22,24 . The monomeric structure is not altered following a controlled temperature rise, and some interfacial degradation is expected to occur regardless of adhesive heating 20,21,25 .…”

“…Therefore, all cases were performed by the same operator. In addition, since the temperature of the blown air affects the bond strength of self-etching primer [15,18,19], all cases were performed in the same unit (Silona M1-F).…”
