“…What has not been adequately addressed is the potential source of the variable efficacy. Previous authors presenting data for a positive effect of PGF on sow fertility have attributed it to an effect on sperm transport, and possibly on time of ovulation (Pena et al. 1998, 2000; Horvat and Bilkei 2003; Kos and Bilkei 2004).…”

“…However, exogenous PGF administered either by injection (Pena et al. 1998) or included in the semen dose increased farrowing rates and, more variably, also litter size (Pena et al. 1998, 2000; Horvat and Bilkei 2003; Kos and Bilkei 2004).…”

“…Interestingly, this treatment significantly improved farrowing rates, during the lowfertility season in the summer (78% vs. 54%). However, in these same sows, litter size was also statistically increased in sows administered PGF 2a throughout the entire year (10.80 vs. 9.14 in the summer, and 11.16 vs. 9.99 the rest of the year) (Pena et al 1998). The authors hypothesized that the PGF 2a mimicked and replaced the physical and pheromone signals sows usually receive during boar contact and elicited a similar contractile effect on the uterus.…”

“…Cloprostenol is a commercially available synthetic analogue of PGF 2a that induces luteolysis followed by oestrus and ovulation (Moeljono et al 1976). The ovarian follicles respond to PGF 2a by producing their own prostaglandins, which in turn activate collagenase and elastase, which are involved in ovulation (Pena et al 1998). The effect of PGF 2a on conception and farrowing rates was examined in a study where PGF 2a was injected into the lips of the vulva, at the time of AI (in the absence of a boar).…”

“…The problem of seasonal infertility in pigs is observed especially, but not only, in moderate climates (1). Research projects on the addition of hormones to semen during summer infertility come from the last decade (10)(11)(12)(13)(14). They mainly focus on using progestagens, gonadotropins, oxytocin, and prostaglandin and its derivatives.…”
