Effect of voluntary muscle contraction on postural stability in healthy adults

Abstract: Introduction: Postural control is a complex system that combines many subcomponents. The central nervous system's connection with the muscular system allows to execute the voluntary movements and provides appropriate tonus and contractions of postural muscles. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of voluntary muscle contraction on the stability of standing posture. Material and methods: Seventeen young adults (24.11 ± 3.05 years) completed 4 bipedal standing attempts lasting 20 seconds each. Measurem… Show more

“…However, an increase in sample entropy decreases the regularity of postural sway, which in turn corresponds to less attention and more automatic control required for balance (11,17,19). According to this interpretation of sample entropy, the findings of this study support the fact that in the static standing position, knee flexion decreases the passive stability and increases the active stability, thereby requiring muscle activity and increased attention to postural stability (22,27,40). This phenomenon was only observed in the ML and vertical directions.…”

“…Posture correction aimed to equalise the myofascial tension with manual therapy and stretching exercise. We used the definition of correct posture as posture, which ensures the balance of antagonistic muscle groups [17][18][19]. The position of individual body segments was assessed with physiotherapeutic examination with McKenzie methodologymechanical diagnosis and therapy-ear lobe projection [20].…”

“…The vision system is the sensory system mainly used by young adults to achieve optimum equilibrium [5]. in conjunction with a deficiency of visual feedback, voluntary muscular contraction can deteriorate standing posture [6]. The findings of a study comparing the balance ability of young adults with physically active or sedentary lifestyles showed that a seden-tary lifestyle was linked to deficits in the ability to balance [7].…”
