Effect of various antagonists on theChanna striatusfillet extract antinociception in mice

Abstract: The effects of an aqueous supernatant of haruan (ASH) (Channa striatus) fillet extract on various antinociception receptor system activities were examined using a mouse abdominal-constriction model. Mice that were pretreated with distilled water, s.c., followed 10 min later by administration of 25%, 50%, and 100% concentration ASH, s.c., produced a significant concentration-dependent antinociceptive activity (p < 0.001). Pretreatment with naloxone (0.3, 1.0, and 3.0 mg/kg body mass), 10 min before ASH administ… Show more

“…The abdominal constrictions seen are due to the acetic acid-induced irritation of the peritoneal cavity (Deraedt et al, 1980). In order to elucidate the mechanisms of antinociceptive activities of compounds/extracts, particularly the types of receptors that modulate, various receptor antagonists were pre-challenged with the compounds/extracts (Omar et al, 2006;Zakaria et al, 2005). A receptor antagonist is a drug that does not incite a biological response itself once it binds to a receptor, but blocks agonist-mediated responses (Katzung et al, 2012).…”

“…The three extracts (300, 500, and 1000 mg/kg), DH 2 O (distilled water; vehicle) and acetylsalicylic acid (ASA; positive control) were administered subcutaneously (s.c.) into the mice (n = 11) and 30 min later, the animals were subjected to the 0.6% acetic acid-induced abdominal constriction test (Zakaria et al, 2008(Zakaria et al, , 2006(Zakaria et al, , 2007. To determine the possible mechanisms of antinociception, thirteen groups of animals were used and each extract, only at 500 mg/kg, was pre-challenged with various receptors' antagonists or mediators' blockers as described elsewhere (Abdel-Salam, 2007;Alhaider, 1991;Ghelardini et al, 2000;Zakaria et al, 2005;Zarrindast et al, 1994).…”

“…Mohd Shafri and Mat Jais reviewed in detail the description, habitat, traditional therapeutic uses, chemical composition, and scientifically proven medicinal properties [6]. The fish is reported to possess antinociceptive [7, 8], antipyretic [9], antidepressant [10, 11], anti-inflammatory [12], antifungal [13], antimicrobial [14], antiosteoarthritic [15], neuroregenerative, and restorative [16] properties and enhances wound healing process [17–19]. In view of traditional and scientific reports on wound healing potential of C. striata and presence of wide range of bioactive components, the present study was undertaken to investigate antiulcer activity.…”
