Effect of Vanadium on the Solidification and Homogenization Behaviors in Inconel 718 Alloy

Abstract: Effect of vanadium (V) on the solidification and homogenization behaviors in Inconel 718 alloy is investigated. V is observed to evenly distribute in dendritic and interdendritic zones, and slightly increase niobium (Nb) and molybdenum (Mo) segregation coefficients. However, Laves phase volume fraction reduces from 2.3 to 0.4%, indicating that V may effectively prevent the precipitation of Laves phase. Homogenization results show that diffusion coefficient of Nb is much higher in the V-containing alloy, and it… Show more

“…The composition of precipitated phase of Pt-free alloy in Figure 1b can be inferred as (Fe, Ni) 2 (Nb, Mo, Ti, Cr, C, Al, W) from Figure 3a, which is consistent with the reported chemical composition ((Fe, Ni) 2 (Nb, Cr, Mo, Ti)) of Laves phase in nickel-based superalloys such as 718Plus and 718. [16,30,31] Figure 3 shows the EPMA maps of elements distribution. As shown in Figure 3a,c, Nb is significantly enriched in Laves phase and Pt slightly enriched in Laves phase.…”

“…The nominal composition of the master alloy (in mass fraction, %) is C 0.02, Cr 19.23, Nb 5.00, Ti 1.08, Mo 3.2, Al 0.54, Fe 18.64, balance Ni. IN718 alloys with different amounts of vanadium are shown in Table 1 [ 14 ].…”

Many studies have used the addition of different elements to control the degree of segregation of the Laves phase, thereby improving the properties of the IN718 alloy.…”
